Short, direct answers about janam kundli, kundali matching, rashis, doshas and daily panchang timings.
The quickest answer is your own chart. It takes a date, a time and a place.
Make my free KundliA janam kundli is your birth chart: a map of where the Sun, Moon and planets stood at the exact moment and place you were born. It shows your lagna (ascendant), your rashi (Moon sign), your nakshatra and the house each graha sits in. Dasha timing, dosha checks and kundali matching are all read from it.
Enter your date of birth, your time of birth and the city you were born in, then press the button. VedicSense draws your janam kundli in a few seconds with your lagna, Moon sign, nakshatra and pada, the degree of every planet, your Vimshottari dasha and the divisional charts. It is free and needs no sign-up or phone number.
In Vedic astrology your rashi is your Moon sign, the sign the Moon was in when you were born. Rashifal, Sade Sati and kundali matching are all counted from it. The Sun sign used in newspaper horoscopes is a Western idea. The Moon changes sign about every two and a quarter days, so your birth date and time decide your rashi.
Vedic and Western astrology start the zodiac from different points. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, fixed against the stars, while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, fixed to the spring equinox. The gap between them, called the ayanamsha, is about 24 degrees today, so a planet often lands one sign earlier in your Vedic chart.
You need your birth time for an accurate lagna, because the ascendant changes sign about every two hours and sets every house in the chart. An error of an hour can change the whole reading. Your Moon sign and nakshatra are less sensitive. If you only know your date of birth, the planets' signs are still reliable.
At least 18 of the 36 gunas should match in kundali matching, and 25 or more is a strong match. A lower score is usually a reason to look closer, not to refuse, because the total is only part of the judgement. Nadi and Bhakoot doshas weigh more than their points suggest, and Mangal dosha is checked separately.
Sade Sati is the seven and a half years when Saturn (Shani) passes through the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself and the sign after it, about two and a half years in each. Most people go through it two or three times in life. Shani Dhaiya is the shorter two and a half year transit of the 4th or 8th sign.
Rahu Kaal is a period of about 90 minutes each day that tradition treats as unlucky for starting anything new. Its time depends on the weekday and on your city's sunrise and sunset, so it differs from city to city on the same day. Work that is already under way can continue. The panchang section above shows today's Rahu Kaal.
Today's panchang is the Hindu calendar reading for the day: the tithi (lunar day), vara (weekday), nakshatra, yoga and karana, each worked out from your city's sunrise. It also gives sunrise and sunset, Rahu Kaal to avoid and Abhijit Muhurat, the best window of the day. People use it to plan pujas, fasts and new beginnings.
Vimshottari dasha tells you which planet is shaping each period of your life. It divides a 120-year cycle among the nine grahas, and the mahadasha running now shows the planet in charge, with antardashas splitting each period for finer timing. The starting point comes from the Moon's nakshatra at birth, so your birth time matters.
