What is the Saturn mahadasha?
The Saturn mahadasha is Saturn's main period in the Vimshottari dasha system, which divides a 120-year cycle among the nine planets in a fixed order. Saturn's share is 19 years. In the sequence it follows the Jupiter mahadasha and comes before the Mercury mahadasha. Where a person enters the cycle depends on the nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth, so one person may begin life in the Saturn period while another reaches it in later years, or not at all within a lifetime.
What does the Saturn mahadasha bring?
Saturn is the significator of work, discipline, endurance, service and time, and its period is read as one in which effort is tested and rewarded slowly. The tradition links it with responsibility, long projects, career built through persistence, and lessons that come through delay. Saturn is the most helpful planet for Taurus and Libra ascendants, and for them its period is read as a time of real achievement. Saturn does well in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses, and the tradition reads its period favourably from there.
How does your ascendant change the Saturn mahadasha?
Which houses Saturn rules depends on your ascendant, and those houses are what its period brings forward. The table gives all twelve ascendants, with Saturn's role for each in the Parashari scheme. It is the most helpful planet (yogakaraka) for Taurus, Libra ascendants, where the tradition reads its period best. It is also a helpful planet for Capricorn, Aquarius ascendants.
| Ascendant | Saturn rules | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 10th and 11th | difficult |
| Taurus | 9th and 10th | most helpful |
| Gemini | 8th and 9th | neutral |
| Cancer | 7th and 8th | difficult |
| Leo | 6th and 7th | difficult |
| Virgo | 5th and 6th | mixed |
| Libra | 4th and 5th | most helpful |
| Scorpio | 3rd and 4th | difficult |
| Sagittarius | 2nd and 3rd | difficult |
| Capricorn | 1st and 2nd | helpful |
| Aquarius | 1st and 12th | helpful |
| Pisces | 11th and 12th | difficult |
What makes the Saturn mahadasha favourable or difficult?
The tradition reads the Saturn period through the planet's condition in your chart. Its role for your ascendant comes first. Its dignity next: Saturn is strongest in Capricorn, Aquarius (its own signs) and Libra (its exaltation), and weakest in Aries. Its house: a harsher planet like Saturn does best in the houses of growth (3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th), and is read as hardest in the 8th and 12th. And its strength overall. The kundli reading scores all four for your chart.
What are the antardashas in the Saturn mahadasha?
Every main period is divided into nine sub-periods (antardashas), one for each planet, in the same fixed order, starting with Saturn's own. Each lasts in proportion to its planet's share of the cycle. The tradition reads a sub-period through its own planet, and through where that planet sits counted from Saturn in your chart: in a pillar or luck house from it the two are read as cooperating, while 6th, 8th or 12th from it they are read as pulling in different directions.
Saturn antardasha in Saturn mahadasha: 3 years 3 days
The period opens with its own sub-period, 3 years 3 days long, in which Saturn's themes of work, discipline, responsibility and slow results show most plainly. The tradition reads how this first stretch goes as a guide to the tone of the whole period, and the start of the period as worth watching closely.
Mercury antardasha in Saturn mahadasha: 2 years 8 months 9 days
Mercury brings its themes of learning, trade, writing and negotiation into Saturn's period of work, discipline, responsibility and slow results, for 2 years 8 months 9 days, the 2nd of nine sub-periods. Their natural relationship is neutral, so the tone rests mostly on where the two sit in your own chart. Being one of the longer sub-periods, it is read as a chapter of its own within the main period.
Ketu antardasha in Saturn mahadasha: 1 year 1 month 9 days
Ketu brings its themes of detachment, endings and inner work into Saturn's period of work, discipline, responsibility and slow results, for 1 year 1 month 9 days, the 3rd of nine sub-periods. Saturn and Ketu are natural enemies, which the tradition reads as a stretch where their matters can pull against each other, so patience helps. It is a mid-length sub-period, long enough to show its own colour.
Venus antardasha in Saturn mahadasha: 3 years 2 months
Venus brings its themes of relationships, comfort, the arts and vehicles into Saturn's period of work, discipline, responsibility and slow results, for 3 years 2 months, the 4th of nine sub-periods. Saturn and Venus are natural friends, which the tradition reads as a smoother stretch in which their matters support each other. Being one of the longer sub-periods, it is read as a chapter of its own within the main period.
Sun antardasha in Saturn mahadasha: 11 months 12 days
The Sun brings its themes of visibility, authority and the father into Saturn's period of work, discipline, responsibility and slow results, for 11 months 12 days, the 5th of nine sub-periods. Saturn and the Sun are natural enemies, which the tradition reads as a stretch where their matters can pull against each other, so patience helps. It is a mid-length sub-period, long enough to show its own colour.
Moon antardasha in Saturn mahadasha: 1 year 7 months
The Moon brings its themes of the mind, the mother, home and travel into Saturn's period of work, discipline, responsibility and slow results, for 1 year 7 months, the 6th of nine sub-periods. Their natural relationship is neutral, so the tone rests mostly on where the two sit in your own chart. It is a mid-length sub-period, long enough to show its own colour.
Mars antardasha in Saturn mahadasha: 1 year 1 month 9 days
Mars brings its themes of drive, property, siblings and competition into Saturn's period of work, discipline, responsibility and slow results, for 1 year 1 month 9 days, the 7th of nine sub-periods. Their natural relationship is neutral, so the tone rests mostly on where the two sit in your own chart. It is a mid-length sub-period, long enough to show its own colour.
Rahu antardasha in Saturn mahadasha: 2 years 10 months 6 days
Rahu brings its themes of ambition, novelty and the foreign into Saturn's period of work, discipline, responsibility and slow results, for 2 years 10 months 6 days, the 8th of nine sub-periods. Saturn and Rahu are natural friends, which the tradition reads as a smoother stretch in which their matters support each other. Being one of the longer sub-periods, it is read as a chapter of its own within the main period.
Jupiter antardasha in Saturn mahadasha: 2 years 6 months 12 days
Jupiter brings its themes of growth, teaching, children and good counsel into Saturn's period of work, discipline, responsibility and slow results, for 2 years 6 months 12 days, the 9th of nine sub-periods. Their natural relationship is neutral, so the tone rests mostly on where the two sit in your own chart. Being one of the longer sub-periods, it is read as a chapter of its own within the main period.
When in the Saturn mahadasha do results show most?
The tradition times a planet's results within its period by the part of its sign it occupies at birth: a planet in the first third of its sign is read as giving its results early in the period, the middle third in the middle, and the last third toward the end. The order reverses for a retrograde planet and for the nodes. Sub-periods add a finer rhythm on top, and transits of slow planets such as Saturn and Jupiter add another. The kundli timeline shows which third applies to your own period.
How do I find my Saturn mahadasha dates?
Your dasha dates come from the Moon's exact position at birth. The nakshatra the Moon occupied sets which period you were born into, and how far the Moon had travelled through it sets how much of that period was already used. Everything after follows the fixed sequence. The Vimshottari dasha calculator lists your Saturn period and its sub-periods, and the form on this page shows when yours runs, if it falls in your lifetime.
How this is calculated
Nirayana rashis with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsha and whole-sign bhavas, computed to arc-second accuracy. Sunrise and sunset are the ones almanacs show, the Sun's upper edge with refraction, so the daily windows agree with the calendars you compare them with. More on our method.
