Sade Sati explained

Short answers to the questions people ask, with the reasoning behind each.

What does Sade Sati mean?

Sade Sati (साढ़े साती) means "seven and a half", the length in years of Saturn's passage across the three signs centred on your natal Moon: the 12th from it, the Moon's own sign, and the 2nd from it. Saturn takes roughly two and a half years to cross one rashi, so three rashis take about seven and a half. It is measured from the Moon sign (chandra rashi), never from the Sun sign and never from the ascendant, which is why it is a different event from the Western "Saturn return", and why two people born on the same date in different years are rarely in the same phase of it. Because Saturn circles the zodiac in about 29.5 years, most people live through Sade Sati two or three times: once in youth, once in middle life, and for a long life once more in old age. The tradition also calls it Shani Sade Sati, and in Maharashtra and Gujarat, Bada Panoti.

Which phase of Sade Sati is the worst?

The tradition names the second phase, Peak, when Saturn transits over the natal Moon itself, as the most demanding of the three, and that is the answer the texts give. The full transit runs in three stages of about thirty months each, named for where Saturn stands relative to the Moon, and each is read for different territory. Worth saying plainly: "worst" is the tradition's emphasis, not a measurement. Classical writers treat the whole seven and a half years as corrective rather than punitive, and some hold the Setting phase harder than the Peak when Saturn happens to rule good houses in the natal chart. The calculator above names the phase for every Sade Sati of your life rather than returning one long date range.

Rising: Saturn in the 12th from the Moon

The first thirty months, beginning when Saturn enters the sign before your natal Moon. The 12th is vyaya bhava, the house of expenditure and of what is let go, so the classical reading covers expense, unsettled circumstances, travel or relocation, and disturbed sleep. Traditional writers describe this stage as the one where the ground shifts before it is clear what is being rebuilt, which is why it is more often felt as unease than as any single event.

Peak: Saturn over the natal Moon

The middle thirty months, and the stage the texts single out, because Saturn stands on the Moon itself rather than beside it. The Moon is manas, the mind, so the classical reading is of the mind carrying weight: mood, patience, sleep and close relationships. This is also the stage where the tradition's advice is most specific and least dramatic: keep routine, keep commitments, and do not make at speed a decision that can be made slowly.

Setting: Saturn in the 2nd from the Moon

The last thirty months, with Saturn in the sign after your Moon. The 2nd is dhana bhava, read for family, accumulated resources and speech, so the classical reading turns towards household matters, savings and how things are said. It is usually described as the mildest of the three, and as the stage where the discipline of the previous five years starts to show a return. It ends when Saturn changes sign, with no tail-off.

How do I check whether my Sade Sati is running now?

You need exactly two facts: your natal Moon sign, and the sign Saturn occupies today. If Saturn is in the sign before your Moon sign, in it, or in the sign after it, Sade Sati is running. Everything else is detail. The calculator above derives your Moon sign from your date, time and place of birth, finds Saturn's sign for today, and then goes further than a yes or no: it scans Saturn's sidereal longitude across your whole life, bisects every sign ingress to well under a day, and prints each Sade Sati and Dhaiya period you have had or will have, with start and end dates in your birthplace's own timezone. The period running now is marked as such. Because the whole answer turns on the Moon sign, the birth details matter: the Moon crosses a rashi in about two and a quarter days, so an hour's error in the time rarely moves it, but a wrong date or a wrong city can move it a whole sign.

What are the Sade Sati start and end dates for each rashi?

Saturn entered Meen (Pisces) on 29 March 2025 and holds it, retrograde re-entry included, until 23 February 2028. That fixes who is under Sade Sati right now. Kumbha is in the Setting phase. Its window ran from 24 Jan 2020 and ends 23 Feb 2028. Meen is in the Peak phase, 29 Apr 2022 to 17 Apr 2030. Mesh is in the Rising phase, 29 Mar 2025 to 31 May 2032. The current or next window for the other nine, in IST: Vrish 3 Jun 2027 to 13 Jul 2034; Mithun 8 Aug 2029 to 27 Aug 2036; Kark 31 May 2032 to 13 Jul 2039; Simha 13 Jul 2034 to 26 Sep 2041; Kanya 27 Aug 2036 to 30 Aug 2044; Tula 22 Oct 2038 to 8 Dec 2046; Vrischika 28 Jan 2041 to 4 Dec 2049; Dhanu 11 Dec 2043 to 25 Feb 2052; Makar 8 Dec 2046 to 5 Feb 2055. Dhanu's last Sade Sati ended on 17 Jan 2023 and Makar's on 29 Mar 2025. These are computed with the Lahiri ayanamsha and given in Indian Standard Time; run your own chart above for the same dates in your birthplace's local time, and see the rashi profiles for what each Moon sign means.

Why do two Sade Sati calculators give different dates?

Four things move the dates, and only one of them is an error. Three are stated conventions (a choice about retrograde spans, a choice about the shared boundary day, and a choice of ayanamsha), and the fourth is a timezone conversion that a report either performs or skips. None of the four makes the other site wrong in itself. What makes a Sade Sati report untrustworthy is declining to say which convention it used, so here are ours, and every date on this page follows them: Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), retrograde spans kept separate rather than merged, the shared boundary day given to the period beginning, and every ingress converted to the birthplace's own timezone.

Retrograde re-entry splits one transit into two spans

Saturn regularly enters a sign, turns retrograde, falls back into the previous one, and re-enters months later. It crossed into Meen on 29 March 2025, but its 2027 loop means the transit does not finally clear Meen until 23 February 2028. A report that merges those spans into one unbroken window hides a real break in the transit; one that prints only the first exit ends the period early. We print each span as it actually happens.

The boundary day belongs to two periods at once

Saturn changes sign at a particular moment, not at midnight, so the calendar day of an ingress is partly inside the period ending and partly inside the one beginning. A site that assigns the whole of that day to the period ending prints an end date one day earlier than ours and a start date one day later. It is a convention rather than a mistake, and it accounts for most one-day disagreements between two otherwise identical reports.

The ayanamsha moves every ingress

A sidereal longitude is the tropical one minus the ayanamsha, so the value chosen decides where every sign boundary falls. We use Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), the Indian standard and the one most Jyotish practice assumes. Other published ayanamshas sit a fraction of a degree away from it, and Saturn is slow enough that a fraction of a degree is days or weeks of transit. Two sites on different ayanamshas disagree about every ingress, not only the borderline ones.

The timezone decides the printed date

An ingress falling late in the universal-time day reads as one date in London and the next in Chennai, so a report printing raw UT dates is a day out for a great many readers. We convert every ingress to the timezone the birthplace was on at that moment, which is the same zone the rest of the report uses. That is why a date here can differ by a day from a site that publishes in IST for everyone regardless of where they were born.

What does Sade Sati actually do, and what can it not tell you?

Sade Sati is a position, not a forecast. What the tradition holds is this: Saturn's passage over the Moon is read as a period asking for patience, structure and honest accounting, and classical writers describe its results as slow and earned rather than sudden. That is a description of what a technique means; it is not a claim about your life. Nothing in a transit has been shown to determine an outcome, and this page will not tell you what is about to happen to your marriage, your money or your body, because no method here can know that. Two things are worth holding onto instead. First, three of the twelve rashis are always covered, so roughly a quarter of everyone alive is inside Sade Sati at any moment, so it is common, not rare. Second, the same transit is read completely differently depending on Saturn's dignity, the houses it rules from your lagna, and the dasha running underneath it. The transit on its own is never the reading.

Does Sade Sati affect everyone with the same Moon sign equally?

No, and the reason is structural rather than mysterious. Saturn is a single graha with a different job in every chart, so the same transit through the same sign is read several different ways depending on what Saturn is in the chart it is crossing. Four things change the reading and none of them is visible from the Moon sign alone: what Saturn rules from your ascendant, the dignity Saturn holds in the sign it is in, how well supported that sign is in your Sarvashtakavarga, and which dasha is running underneath. Classical practice weighs all four before saying anything about a transit at all, which is why a Moon-sign-only forecast is the thinnest reading available.

What Saturn rules from your ascendant

The same Saturn is a benefic in one chart and a difficulty in another, because rulership is what decides its job. For a Tula (Libra) lagna, Saturn rules the 4th and the 5th (a kendra and a trikona at once), which makes it that chart's yogakaraka, and the transit is read as demanding but constructive. For a Mesh (Aries) lagna the same Saturn rules the 10th and the 11th and is counted among that chart's difficult grahas.

Saturn's own dignity in the sign it is crossing

Dignity is the second filter. Saturn is exalted in Tula and debilitated in Mesh, holds Makar and Kumbha as its own signs, and is read as giving its results more cleanly from a sign it is comfortable in. A Sade Sati running through a sign where Saturn is strong and one running through a sign where it is weak are described quite differently by the same texts, even for two people who share a Moon sign.

How well supported the sign is in your Sarvashtakavarga

Sarvashtakavarga scores every sign of your chart with a count of bindus, and the tradition reads a transit through a thinly supported sign as working harder for the same result. It is the nearest thing classical practice has to a strength meter for a transit, and it is entirely personal: the sign Saturn is crossing may be well supported in your chart and thin in the chart of someone born with the same Moon sign.

The dasha running underneath the transit

Classical practice reads transit and dasha together, and where the two disagree the dasha usually sets the register. A Sade Sati falling inside a benefic mahadasha and one falling inside a Saturn period are not the same event, even for two charts with the same Moon sign and the same Saturn. This is the largest single reason two people report entirely different experiences of a transit that is, on paper, identical.

What is the difference between Sade Sati and Shani Dhaiya?

Dhaiya, also called Kantak Shani or Small Panoti, is Saturn's transit through the 4th or the 8th sign from your natal Moon. Dhaiya means two and a half, the years Saturn takes to cross a single sign, so it lasts about a third as long as Sade Sati's seven and a half, and it has no phase structure. The two are separate events, and because they are defined by different houses from the Moon they can never overlap: 12, 1 and 2 for one, 4 and 8 for the other, and Saturn is only ever in one sign at a time. At any moment a chart is under Sade Sati, under Dhaiya, or under neither. The 4th-house passage is traditionally read for home, property and domestic life, the 8th for sudden change. Dhaiya is generally considered the milder of the two, and our Shani Dhaiya calculator checks it from the same birth details.

Why does a Sade Sati calculator need my birth time and birthplace?

Because the whole answer hangs on one number, the sign your Moon occupied at birth, and that number is time-sensitive. The Moon moves about one degree every two hours and changes rashi every two and a quarter days, so a birth within a few hours of a sign change lands in the wrong rashi if the time is wrong, and the report then names the wrong phase, or reports Sade Sati when a Dhaiya is running. The birthplace does two separate jobs: it fixes the timezone your clock time has to be converted from, and it is the zone the dates are printed back in. Nothing is stored. Birth details are used for the calculation and discarded when the page renders. There is no account, no login and no phone number collected, so there is nothing here capable of tying a chart to a person.

How this is calculated

Nirayana rashis with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsha and whole-sign bhavas, computed to arc-second accuracy. Sunrise and sunset are the ones almanacs show, the Sun's upper edge with refraction, so the daily windows agree with the calendars you compare them with. More on our method.

Check my Sade Sati
What does Sade Sati mean?

Sade Sati means "seven and a half", the number of years Saturn takes to cross the three signs centred on your natal Moon. Those three signs are the 12th from the Moon, the Moon's own sign, and the 2nd from it. It is also called Shani Sade Sati, or Bada Panoti in Maharashtra and Gujarat.

How long does Sade Sati last?

About seven and a half years: three phases of roughly two and a half years each, as Saturn crosses the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from your natal Moon. Retrograde re-entries can stretch a printed window past eight years, because Saturn leaves a sign, turns back into it, and only finally clears it months later.

Which phase of Sade Sati is worse?

The second phase, the Peak, when Saturn transits over the natal Moon itself. The Rising phase before it is read for expense and unsettled circumstances, and the Setting phase after it for family, speech and finances, usually described as the mildest of the three. This is the tradition's emphasis rather than a measurement.

Which rashis are in Sade Sati right now?

Kumbha, Meen and Mesh, because Saturn is transiting Meen from 29 March 2025 until 23 February 2028. Kumbha is in the Setting phase, Meen in the Peak phase and Mesh in the Rising phase. Three of the twelve rashis are always covered, so about a quarter of people are inside Sade Sati at any time.

How do I calculate Sade Sati from my date of birth?

Find your natal Moon sign, then check whether Saturn is currently in that sign, the one before it, or the one after it. If it is, Sade Sati is running. The calculator above does both steps from your birth date, time and place, and prints every period of your life with dates rather than a bare yes or no.

Which sign is Sade Sati calculated from?

From the natal Moon sign (chandra rashi), not the Sun sign and not the ascendant. This is the commonest mistake in a Sade Sati check, and it is why an accurate birth date and birthplace matter: the Moon changes rashi every two and a quarter days, so a wrong date puts the whole transit in the wrong place.

Is Sade Sati always bad?

No, classical texts describe Sade Sati as a demanding, corrective period rather than a purely negative one, and read its results as slow and earned rather than sudden. How it reads depends on Saturn's dignity, the houses it rules from your ascendant, and the dasha running at the same time, which is why the same transit is not felt equally by everyone.

How many times does Sade Sati occur in a lifetime?

Sade Sati comes round two or three times in most lives. Saturn takes about 29.5 years to circle the zodiac, so the transit returns roughly every thirty years, typically once in youth, once in middle life and, for a long life, once again in old age. Each occurrence falls against a different part of the dasha sequence.

Why do Sade Sati dates differ between websites?

Four reasons, and only one of them is an error: retrograde re-entries that split a transit into separate spans, the shared boundary day being assigned to the ending period, a different ayanamsha, and dates left in UT instead of local time. We use Lahiri, keep the retrograde spans separate, and print dates in the birthplace's own timezone.

Can Sade Sati and Shani Dhaiya run at the same time?

No, Sade Sati is Saturn in the 12th, 1st or 2nd from the natal Moon, while Dhaiya is Saturn in the 4th or the 8th. Those five houses do not overlap and Saturn occupies one sign at a time, so a chart is under one, the other, or neither. Dhaiya is the shorter at about two and a half years.
