01What is KP astrology?
KP astrology is Krishnamurti Paddhati, the system set out by K. S. Krishnamurti in the middle of the twentieth century. It keeps the grahas, the bhavas and the nakshatras of Jyotish and replaces what sits underneath them. Every longitude is read at three levels: the sign gives the general field, the star lord (the nakshatra lord) says what a matter is about, and the sub lord is held to decide whether it comes about at all. That third level is Krishnamurti's own addition and is the whole of what makes KP a separate system.
02How is the KP system different from Vedic astrology?
It is a different method, and this page will not blur the two. Parashari Jyotish is the classical body of the tradition; KP is twentieth-century and departs from it in three concrete places. It uses its own ayanamsha, not Lahiri. It uses Placidus cusps (unequal, degree-based houses) rather than whole-sign bhavas. And it adds the sub, which has no parashari counterpart. Judgement changes accordingly: a planet in the star of an occupant signifies a house more strongly than the house lord itself, which reverses the usual parashari priority. KP is not older Jyotish rediscovered and it is not an improvement on Jyotish that anyone has demonstrated. It is a distinct twentieth-century method, and we label it as one.
03What is a sub lord in KP astrology?
Each nakshatra of 13°20′ is cut into nine unequal parts in the proportions of the Vimshottari dasha (Venus 20 of 120, the Sun 6 of 120), beginning from the nakshatra's own lord. The lord of the part a position falls in is its sub lord. The widths run from the Sun's 40 arc-minutes to Venus's 2°13′. Twenty-seven nakshatras of nine subs give 243 divisions; six of them straddle a sign boundary and KP splits those, which is where the familiar figure of 249 comes from. Krishnamurti's central claim is that this narrowest level is the deciding one.
04Why does KP use a different ayanamsha?
Because Krishnamurti fixed his own value rather than adopting Lahiri, and in KP that choice cannot be shrugged off. His ayanamsha runs roughly five minutes forty-nine seconds of arc behind Lahiri. That gap is about a seventh of the narrowest sub, so any planet lying within about six arc-minutes of a sub boundary carries a different sub lord under each ayanamsha, and the sub lord is the answer. Two charts for the same birth, one Lahiri and one KP, are therefore not interchangeable, and this page computes the KP ayanamsha rather than shifting a Lahiri chart and hoping.
05Why does KP use Placidus houses?
Because KP judges a house from its cusp, and a cusp needs a degree. Placidus divides a point's diurnal semi-arc into three, which places each intermediate cusp at a specific longitude; the houses come out unequal, one sign can hold two cusps and another none, and every cusp acquires a star lord and a sub lord of its own to be read. Whole-sign bhavas have no cusp degree at all, so the KP method has nothing to work with in them. The cost is geometric: Placidus distorts badly at high latitude and has no solution beyond about 66°, which is a real limit of the system rather than of any one calculator.
06What are significators in KP astrology?
The planets connected to a house, ranked in four groups. First, planets in the star of an occupant of the house. Second, the occupants themselves. Third, planets in the star of the house lord. Fourth, the house lord. The ordering is the point: being in the star of an occupant outranks owning the house, which is precisely where KP departs from parashari judgement. Rahu and Ketu are handled separately: a node signifies what its dispositor, its star lord and any planet conjoined with it signify, which is why nodes so often dominate a KP significator list.
07What are Ruling Planets in KP?
The lords of the moment a judgement is made, not of the birth: the lord of the weekday, the sign lord and star lord of the Moon, and the sign lord and star lord of the ascendant then rising. Most practitioners add the sub lords of the Moon and ascendant, and some add the day's own sub, which is one of several places where practice is not uniform. One detail catches people out: the KP day begins at sunrise, so a moment before sunrise takes the previous weekday's lord.
08Why does KP astrology fail?
It is a fair question and it deserves a straight answer from a site that computes KP. Four things are usually behind it: an approximate birth time, disagreement over the ayanamsha value itself, the interpretive slack in a significator list long enough to fit almost any outcome after the fact, and the underlying claim itself: no method, KP or parashari, has been shown under controlled conditions to predict events. A chart "rectified" until it agrees with things already known is not evidence of anything either. KP is more specific than most systems, which makes it easier to check and therefore easier to be caught out by. We compute it exactly as it defines itself and leave the claim where it belongs.
Birth time: the sub is narrower than the record
The narrowest sub is 40 arc-minutes of longitude and the ascendant crosses that in under three minutes. A time rounded to the nearest five or ten minutes therefore produces a chart that is entirely confident and has the wrong ascendant sub lord in it, which in KP is the first thing read. Nothing downstream can recover from that, and nothing on the chart shows it has happened.
Ayanamsha: practitioners do not agree on the value
Krishnamurti's original figure and the later revised ones differ by a few arc-minutes. That is a fraction of a sub, and it matters only near a boundary, but near a boundary it changes the sub lord, and the sub lord is the answer. Two readers working carefully from the same birth data can therefore reach different conclusions without either having made an arithmetic mistake.
Interpretive slack: the significator list is long
Four ranked groups already draw in most of the chart, and the node rules add every planet a node's dispositor, star lord and conjunct planets signify. A list that long can usually be made to fit whatever happened once you know what happened. The discipline KP claims for itself comes from committing to a reading in advance, which is a different exercise from explaining one afterwards.
The underlying claim has not been demonstrated
This is the part no amount of computational care touches. No astrological method has been shown under controlled conditions to predict events, and KP is not an exception to that. What is distinctive about KP is that it commits to narrow, checkable statements, which makes it easier to test than a vaguer method and correspondingly easier to be caught out by.
09Does KP astrology need an exact birth time?
More than any other system on this site. A four-minute error moves the ascendant about a degree, which is enough to change its sub lord, and in KP the ascendant's sub lord is the first thing read. Recorded hospital times are often rounded to five or ten minutes; a remembered time is worse. If your time is approximate, a KP chart is the wrong tool to lean on and a parashari chart, which reads whole signs and tolerates the uncertainty, is the honest alternative. We say so on the form as well, because a system this precise about the input should be equally plain about it.
