Jupiter Mahadasha Effects

The Jupiter mahadasha is the sixteen-year main period of Jupiter, the greatest natural benefic. The tradition reads it as expansive: study, teaching, children, wealth and a widening of circumstances, traditionally among the most favourable periods, though its role for your ascendant still shapes it.

Jupiter mahadasha explained

Short answers to the questions people ask, with the reasoning behind each.

What is the Jupiter mahadasha?

The Jupiter mahadasha is Jupiter's main period in the Vimshottari dasha system, which divides a 120-year cycle among the nine planets in a fixed order. Jupiter's share is 16 years. In the sequence it follows the Rahu mahadasha and comes before the Saturn mahadasha. Where a person enters the cycle depends on the nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth, so one person may begin life in the Jupiter period while another reaches it in later years, or not at all within a lifetime.

What does the Jupiter mahadasha bring?

Jupiter is the significator of wisdom, teachers, children, wealth and dharma, and its period is read as one of growth. The tradition links it with higher learning, good counsel, family events, faith and an improvement in circumstances. Because Jupiter is the greatest benefic, its period is read favourably in most charts. The exceptions are when Jupiter rules difficult houses for the ascendant, as for Taurus and Libra, or is weak, in which case its promise is read as held back.

How does your ascendant change the Jupiter mahadasha?

Which houses Jupiter rules depends on your ascendant, and those houses are what its period brings forward. The table gives all twelve ascendants, with Jupiter's role for each in the Parashari scheme. It is the most helpful planet (yogakaraka) for Pisces ascendants, where the tradition reads its period best. It is also a helpful planet for Aries, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio ascendants.

What makes the Jupiter mahadasha favourable or difficult?

The tradition reads the Jupiter period through the planet's condition in your chart. Its role for your ascendant comes first. Its dignity next: Jupiter is strongest in Sagittarius, Pisces (its own signs) and Cancer (its exaltation), and weakest in Capricorn. Its house: a natural benefic like Jupiter does best in the pillar and luck houses (1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th), and is read as hardest in the 8th and 12th. And its strength overall. The kundli reading scores all four for your chart.

What are the antardashas in the Jupiter mahadasha?

Every main period is divided into nine sub-periods (antardashas), one for each planet, in the same fixed order, starting with Jupiter's own. Each lasts in proportion to its planet's share of the cycle. The tradition reads a sub-period through its own planet, and through where that planet sits counted from Jupiter in your chart: in a pillar or luck house from it the two are read as cooperating, while 6th, 8th or 12th from it they are read as pulling in different directions.

Jupiter antardasha in Jupiter mahadasha: 2 years 1 month 18 days

The period opens with its own sub-period, 2 years 1 month 18 days long, in which Jupiter's themes of growth, teaching, children and good counsel show most plainly. The tradition reads how this first stretch goes as a guide to the tone of the whole period, and the start of the period as worth watching closely.

Saturn antardasha in Jupiter mahadasha: 2 years 6 months 12 days

Saturn brings its themes of work, discipline, responsibility and slow results into Jupiter's period of growth, teaching, children and good counsel, for 2 years 6 months 12 days, the 2nd of nine sub-periods. Their natural relationship is neutral, so the tone rests mostly on where the two sit in your own chart. Being one of the longer sub-periods, it is read as a chapter of its own within the main period.

Mercury antardasha in Jupiter mahadasha: 2 years 3 months 6 days

Mercury brings its themes of learning, trade, writing and negotiation into Jupiter's period of growth, teaching, children and good counsel, for 2 years 3 months 6 days, the 3rd of nine sub-periods. Their natural relationship is neutral, so the tone rests mostly on where the two sit in your own chart. It is a mid-length sub-period, long enough to show its own colour.

Ketu antardasha in Jupiter mahadasha: 11 months 6 days

Ketu brings its themes of detachment, endings and inner work into Jupiter's period of growth, teaching, children and good counsel, for 11 months 6 days, the 4th of nine sub-periods. Their natural relationship is neutral, so the tone rests mostly on where the two sit in your own chart. It is a mid-length sub-period, long enough to show its own colour.

Venus antardasha in Jupiter mahadasha: 2 years 8 months

Venus brings its themes of relationships, comfort, the arts and vehicles into Jupiter's period of growth, teaching, children and good counsel, for 2 years 8 months, the 5th of nine sub-periods. Their natural relationship is neutral, so the tone rests mostly on where the two sit in your own chart. Being one of the longer sub-periods, it is read as a chapter of its own within the main period.

Sun antardasha in Jupiter mahadasha: 9 months 18 days

The Sun brings its themes of visibility, authority and the father into Jupiter's period of growth, teaching, children and good counsel, for 9 months 18 days, the 6th of nine sub-periods. Jupiter and the Sun are natural friends, which the tradition reads as a smoother stretch in which their matters support each other. It is a mid-length sub-period, long enough to show its own colour.

Moon antardasha in Jupiter mahadasha: 1 year 4 months

The Moon brings its themes of the mind, the mother, home and travel into Jupiter's period of growth, teaching, children and good counsel, for 1 year 4 months, the 7th of nine sub-periods. Their natural relationship is neutral, so the tone rests mostly on where the two sit in your own chart. It is a mid-length sub-period, long enough to show its own colour.

Mars antardasha in Jupiter mahadasha: 11 months 6 days

Mars brings its themes of drive, property, siblings and competition into Jupiter's period of growth, teaching, children and good counsel, for 11 months 6 days, the 8th of nine sub-periods. Jupiter and Mars are natural friends, which the tradition reads as a smoother stretch in which their matters support each other. It is a mid-length sub-period, long enough to show its own colour.

Rahu antardasha in Jupiter mahadasha: 2 years 4 months 24 days

Rahu brings its themes of ambition, novelty and the foreign into Jupiter's period of growth, teaching, children and good counsel, for 2 years 4 months 24 days, the 9th of nine sub-periods. Their natural relationship is neutral, so the tone rests mostly on where the two sit in your own chart. It is a mid-length sub-period, long enough to show its own colour.

When in the Jupiter mahadasha do results show most?

The tradition times a planet's results within its period by the part of its sign it occupies at birth: a planet in the first third of its sign is read as giving its results early in the period, the middle third in the middle, and the last third toward the end. The order reverses for a retrograde planet and for the nodes. Sub-periods add a finer rhythm on top, and transits of slow planets such as Saturn and Jupiter add another. The kundli timeline shows which third applies to your own period.

How do I find my Jupiter mahadasha dates?

Your dasha dates come from the Moon's exact position at birth. The nakshatra the Moon occupied sets which period you were born into, and how far the Moon had travelled through it sets how much of that period was already used. Everything after follows the fixed sequence. The Vimshottari dasha calculator lists your Jupiter period and its sub-periods, and the form on this page shows when yours runs, if it falls in your lifetime.

How this is calculated

Nirayana rashis with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsha and whole-sign bhavas, computed to arc-second accuracy. Sunrise and sunset are the ones almanacs show, the Sun's upper edge with refraction, so the daily windows agree with the calendars you compare them with. More on our method.

Find my Jupiter mahadasha
What is Jupiter mahadasha?

Jupiter mahadasha is Jupiter's 16-year main period in the Vimshottari dasha system. The tradition links it with growth, teaching, children and good counsel, and reads how it unfolds through Jupiter's strength and role in your own chart.

How long is the Jupiter mahadasha?

The Jupiter mahadasha lasts 16 years, divided into nine sub-periods. Its own sub-period runs 2 years 1 month 18 days; the longest is Venus's, at 2 years 8 months, and the shortest is the Sun's, at 9 months 18 days.

Is the Jupiter mahadasha good or bad?

The Jupiter mahadasha is traditionally read as one of the most favourable periods, bringing growth, learning and good fortune, especially when Jupiter is strong. For ascendants where Jupiter rules difficult houses, such as Taurus and Libra, the tradition reads a more mixed period.

Which antardasha is best in the Jupiter mahadasha?

The tradition reads sub-periods of Jupiter's natural friends as smoother: in the Jupiter mahadasha those are Sun, Mars. In your own chart, where each sits counted from Jupiter matters more than the friendship.

What is Guru mahadasha?

Guru is the Hindi and Sanskrit name for Jupiter, so Guru mahadasha is the same 16-year Jupiter period described on this page.

What comes after the Jupiter mahadasha?

The Saturn mahadasha follows, lasting 19 years. The tradition links it with work, discipline, responsibility and slow results, and the change between the two periods is often read as a shift in the main themes of life.

Is the Jupiter mahadasha always good?

The tradition reads it favourably in most charts, but not all. Jupiter's role for your ascendant and its strength decide how much of its promise comes through, which is why the same period reads differently for different people.

Is the Jupiter mahadasha good for children and study?

Jupiter is the significator of children and learning, so its period is read as favouring both, more so when Jupiter is strong and connected with the 5th or 9th house.
