What does the Sun in the 1st house mean?
The Sun in the 1st is read as a strong sense of self and natural authority: confidence, leadership, a visible presence and good vitality, with pride to keep in check. The 1st house, the ascendant, is the house of the self: body, temperament, vitality and the direction of life. It is both a pillar house and a house of luck, which makes it the single most important house in the chart.
What does the Sun bring to the 1st house?
The Sun is the natural significator of the self, authority, vitality and the father: a hot, assertive planet that brings clarity and leadership wherever it sits, and burns what sits too close to it. It is strongest in Leo (its own sign) and Aries (its exaltation), and weakest in Libra. In the 1st house the tradition reads that nature through three things at once: the planet's own character, the houses it rules for your ascendant, and its strength, so the same Sun gives a different flavour in different charts.
How does the ascendant change the Sun in the 1st?
Which sign the Sun occupies when it is in your 1st house depends on the ascendant, and so do the houses it rules and its role. Houses are counted whole-sign from the ascendant (a cusp-based system such as Placidus or Bhava Chalit can move a planet near a sign edge into the next house). The Sun is strongest here for a Aries ascendant (Aries), a Leo ascendant (Leo). It is weakest for a Libra ascendant (Libra). The Rules column shows the houses the Sun brings with it into the 1st.
| Ascendant | 1st sign | Dignity | Rules | Role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Aries | exalted (strongest) | 5th | helpful |
| Taurus | Taurus | enemy sign | 4th | helpful |
| Gemini | Gemini | neutral sign | 3rd | difficult |
| Cancer | Cancer | friendly sign | 2nd | neutral |
| Leo | Leo | own sign (strong) | 1st | helpful |
| Virgo | Virgo | neutral sign | 12th | neutral |
| Libra | Libra | debilitated (weakest) | 11th | difficult |
| Scorpio | Scorpio | friendly sign | 10th | most helpful |
| Sagittarius | Sagittarius | friendly sign | 9th | helpful |
| Capricorn | Capricorn | enemy sign | 8th | neutral |
| Aquarius | Aquarius | enemy sign | 7th | neutral |
| Pisces | Pisces | friendly sign | 6th | difficult |
What makes the Sun in the 1st stronger or weaker?
The placement is the same label in every chart, but the tradition reads its results through the strength of the Sun. Dignity comes first: a planet in its own or exaltation sign gives its results more fully, and one in its sign of weakness gives them weakly. Company and aspects come next: Jupiter's aspect is read as protective, and a harsh planet joining it as adding friction. Closeness to the Sun weakens a planet. And the 1st house itself is read as a whole, with every planet in it and its own ruler's placement weighed together.
How does the D9 confirm the Sun in the 1st?
Parashari practice checks a birth-chart placement in the divisional chart for its subject: for the 1st house that is the D9 (navamsa), used for inner strength and the confirmation of every birth-chart placement. If the Sun is in its own or exaltation sign there, the tradition reads the placement as confirmed; if it is in its sign of weakness, as held back. A divisional chart changes sign every 3 degrees and 20 minutes of zodiac, so it is sensitive to the birth time, and a time known to the minute makes this check reliable. The kundli reading runs it for your chart.
When does the Sun in the 1st come forward?
The tradition reads a placement as lifelong but most active during the periods of the planet involved. In the Vimshottari dasha system, the main period (mahadasha) and sub-periods (antardasha) of the Sun, whose main period lasts 6 years are when the themes of this placement are read as most visible, together with periods of planets that aspect it or sit with it. The dasha calculator lists those periods for your birth, and the kundli timeline reads the running one for you.
Which other factors are read with the Sun in the 1st?
The tradition never reads a house from one placement alone. The 1st house also has its natural significators, the Sun, the natural significator of the self and vitality, and a house is read as sound when both its ruler and its significators are strong. Jupiter's aspect on the 1st is read as protective whichever planet sits there. The other pages in this series cover each planet and each house ruler in the 1st, and the kundli reading weighs them all together for your chart.
How does KP read the Sun in the 1st?
Krishnamurti Paddhati (KP) divides the houses unequally from the moment of birth and judges the 1st house by the sub-lord of its starting point. For the self and temperament, KP counts links to the 1st, 5th, 11th houses as supporting and to the 6th, 8th, 12th as working against it. The Sun matters in KP through those links: if it is a significator of the 1st house, its periods are read as bringing the house's matters forward. The KP reading on the kundli page shows this for your chart.
How this is calculated
Nirayana rashis with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsha and whole-sign bhavas, computed to arc-second accuracy. Sunrise and sunset are the ones almanacs show, the Sun's upper edge with refraction, so the daily windows agree with the calendars you compare them with. More on our method.
