What is the Sun mahadasha?
The Sun mahadasha is the Sun's main period in the Vimshottari dasha system, which divides a 120-year cycle among the nine planets in a fixed order. The Sun's share is 6 years. In the sequence it follows the Venus mahadasha and comes before the Moon mahadasha. Where a person enters the cycle depends on the nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth, so one person may begin life in the Sun period while another reaches it in later years, or not at all within a lifetime.
What does the Sun mahadasha bring?
The Sun stands for the self, authority, vitality and the father, and its period is read as one in which those themes come to the front. People often describe it as a time when they are noticed: promotions, public roles, dealings with government or senior people, and a clearer sense of direction. Because the Sun is a hot, assertive planet, the tradition also reads pride and friction with authority as possible when the Sun is weak or badly placed. Being only six years long, the period is often read as a short, focused chapter between longer ones.
How does your ascendant change the Sun mahadasha?
Which houses the Sun rules depends on your ascendant, and those houses are what its period brings forward. The table gives all twelve ascendants, with the Sun's role for each in the Parashari scheme. It is the most helpful planet (yogakaraka) for Scorpio ascendants, where the tradition reads its period best. It is also a helpful planet for Aries, Taurus, Leo, Sagittarius ascendants.
| Ascendant | Sun rules | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 5th | helpful |
| Taurus | 4th | helpful |
| Gemini | 3rd | difficult |
| Cancer | 2nd | neutral |
| Leo | 1st | helpful |
| Virgo | 12th | neutral |
| Libra | 11th | difficult |
| Scorpio | 10th | most helpful |
| Sagittarius | 9th | helpful |
| Capricorn | 8th | neutral |
| Aquarius | 7th | neutral |
| Pisces | 6th | difficult |
What makes the Sun mahadasha favourable or difficult?
The tradition reads the Sun period through the planet's condition in your chart. Its role for your ascendant comes first. Its dignity next: the Sun is strongest in Leo (its own sign) and Aries (its exaltation), and weakest in Libra. Its house: a harsher planet like the Sun does best in the houses of growth (3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th), and is read as hardest in the 8th and 12th. And its strength overall. The kundli reading scores all four for your chart.
What are the antardashas in the Sun mahadasha?
Every main period is divided into nine sub-periods (antardashas), one for each planet, in the same fixed order, starting with the Sun's own. Each lasts in proportion to its planet's share of the cycle. The tradition reads a sub-period through its own planet, and through where that planet sits counted from the Sun in your chart: in a pillar or luck house from it the two are read as cooperating, while 6th, 8th or 12th from it they are read as pulling in different directions.

When in the Sun mahadasha do results show most?
The tradition times a planet's results within its period by the part of its sign it occupies at birth: a planet in the first third of its sign is read as giving its results early in the period, the middle third in the middle, and the last third toward the end. The order reverses for a retrograde planet and for the nodes. Sub-periods add a finer rhythm on top, and transits of slow planets such as Saturn and Jupiter add another. The kundli timeline shows which third applies to your own period.
How do I find my Sun mahadasha dates?
Your dasha dates come from the Moon's exact position at birth. The nakshatra the Moon occupied sets which period you were born into, and how far the Moon had travelled through it sets how much of that period was already used. Everything after follows the fixed sequence. The Vimshottari dasha calculator lists your Sun period and its sub-periods, and the form on this page shows when yours runs, if it falls in your lifetime.
How this is calculated
Nirayana rashis with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsha and whole-sign bhavas, computed to arc-second accuracy. Sunrise and sunset are the ones almanacs show, the Sun's upper edge with refraction, so the daily windows agree with the calendars you compare them with. More on our method.
