What is the Rahu mahadasha?
The Rahu mahadasha is Rahu's main period in the Vimshottari dasha system, which divides a 120-year cycle among the nine planets in a fixed order. Rahu's share is 18 years. In the sequence it follows the Mars mahadasha and comes before the Jupiter mahadasha. Where a person enters the cycle depends on the nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth, so one person may begin life in the Rahu period while another reaches it in later years, or not at all within a lifetime.
What does the Rahu mahadasha bring?
Rahu is a shadow planet, the north node of the Moon, read as appetite, ambition, novelty and the foreign. Its period is linked in the tradition with sudden opportunities, unusual paths, technology, travel abroad and experiences outside one's background. Because Rahu owns no sign, the tradition reads its period through the house it occupies and its dispositor, the ruler of its sign. In a house of growth (3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th) it is read as a period of strong worldly progress; elsewhere it can be restless.
What does the Rahu mahadasha bring in each house?
Rahu owns no sign, so its period is read mainly through the house it occupies, together with the ruler of the sign it sits in. The table gives the tradition's reading of Rahu in each of the twelve houses, which is what its period is read as bringing forward. Houses are counted whole-sign from the ascendant (a cusp-based system such as Placidus or Bhava Chalit can move a planet near a sign edge into the next house).
| Where Rahu sits | What the period brings forward |
|---|---|
| 1st house | An unconventional, ambitious self-image: a drive to stand out, interest in the new and foreign, and a restless identity. |
| 2nd house | Unusual ways of earning and speaking: sudden gains and losses, foreign food or languages, and family dynamics that need care. |
| 3rd house | Rahu does well in the house of effort: bold initiative, media, technology and courage in new ventures. |
| 4th house | Restlessness at home: changes of residence, foreign property or connections, and peace of mind built deliberately. |
| 5th house | An unconventional, inventive intelligence: interest in unusual subjects, with children and romance read as needing care. |
| 6th house | Strong against rivals and obstacles: success in competition, technology, foreign service and unconventional work. |
| 7th house | Unusual or cross-cultural partnerships: a partner from a different background, strong attraction, and a relationship that needs clear understanding. |
| 8th house | Sudden changes and hidden subjects: research, occult or technical interests, and caution with risk. |
| 9th house | Unconventional beliefs and fortune through foreign or modern paths, with differences with the father or teachers possible. |
| 10th house | Ambition and public visibility: careers in technology, media, politics, foreign companies or anything new. |
| 11th house | Large ambitions and gains: income from networks, technology or foreign sources, and influential friends. |
| 12th house | Expenses through foreign travel or hidden matters: life abroad, spiritual searching and a restless need for rest. |
What makes the Rahu mahadasha favourable or difficult?
The tradition reads the Rahu period through four things. Its house: like other harsh planets, Rahu is read as doing best in the houses of growth, the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th, and as hardest in the 8th and 12th. Its dispositor, the ruler of its sign: a strong, well-placed dispositor steers the period constructively. Its company: a planet joined with Rahu is read as giving its own colour to the period. And Jupiter's aspect on Rahu is read as protective. The kundli reading weighs these for your chart.
What are the antardashas in the Rahu mahadasha?
Every main period is divided into nine sub-periods (antardashas), one for each planet, in the same fixed order, starting with Rahu's own. Each lasts in proportion to its planet's share of the cycle. The tradition reads a sub-period through its own planet, and through where that planet sits counted from Rahu in your chart: in a pillar or luck house from it the two are read as cooperating, while 6th, 8th or 12th from it they are read as pulling in different directions.
Rahu antardasha in Rahu mahadasha: 2 years 8 months 12 days
The period opens with its own sub-period, 2 years 8 months 12 days long, in which Rahu's themes of ambition, novelty and the foreign show most plainly. The tradition reads how this first stretch goes as a guide to the tone of the whole period, and the start of the period as worth watching closely.
Jupiter antardasha in Rahu mahadasha: 2 years 4 months 24 days
Jupiter brings its themes of growth, teaching, children and good counsel into Rahu's period of ambition, novelty and the foreign, for 2 years 4 months 24 days, the 2nd of nine sub-periods. Their natural relationship is neutral, so the tone rests mostly on where the two sit in your own chart. It is a mid-length sub-period, long enough to show its own colour.
Saturn antardasha in Rahu mahadasha: 2 years 10 months 6 days
Saturn brings its themes of work, discipline, responsibility and slow results into Rahu's period of ambition, novelty and the foreign, for 2 years 10 months 6 days, the 3rd of nine sub-periods. Rahu and Saturn are natural friends, which the tradition reads as a smoother stretch in which their matters support each other. Being one of the longer sub-periods, it is read as a chapter of its own within the main period.
Mercury antardasha in Rahu mahadasha: 2 years 6 months 18 days
Mercury brings its themes of learning, trade, writing and negotiation into Rahu's period of ambition, novelty and the foreign, for 2 years 6 months 18 days, the 4th of nine sub-periods. Their natural relationship is neutral, so the tone rests mostly on where the two sit in your own chart. Being one of the longer sub-periods, it is read as a chapter of its own within the main period.
Ketu antardasha in Rahu mahadasha: 1 year 18 days
Ketu brings its themes of detachment, endings and inner work into Rahu's period of ambition, novelty and the foreign, for 1 year 18 days, the 5th of nine sub-periods. The two nodes always sit opposite each other in a chart, so this sub-period is read as a swing between the two ends of one axis. It is a mid-length sub-period, long enough to show its own colour.
Venus antardasha in Rahu mahadasha: 3 years
Venus brings its themes of relationships, comfort, the arts and vehicles into Rahu's period of ambition, novelty and the foreign, for 3 years, the 6th of nine sub-periods. Rahu and Venus are natural friends, which the tradition reads as a smoother stretch in which their matters support each other. Being one of the longer sub-periods, it is read as a chapter of its own within the main period.
Sun antardasha in Rahu mahadasha: 10 months 24 days
The Sun brings its themes of visibility, authority and the father into Rahu's period of ambition, novelty and the foreign, for 10 months 24 days, the 7th of nine sub-periods. Rahu and the Sun are natural enemies, which the tradition reads as a stretch where their matters can pull against each other, so patience helps. It is a mid-length sub-period, long enough to show its own colour.
Moon antardasha in Rahu mahadasha: 1 year 6 months
The Moon brings its themes of the mind, the mother, home and travel into Rahu's period of ambition, novelty and the foreign, for 1 year 6 months, the 8th of nine sub-periods. Their natural relationship is neutral, so the tone rests mostly on where the two sit in your own chart. It is a mid-length sub-period, long enough to show its own colour.
Mars antardasha in Rahu mahadasha: 1 year 18 days
Mars brings its themes of drive, property, siblings and competition into Rahu's period of ambition, novelty and the foreign, for 1 year 18 days, the 9th of nine sub-periods. Their natural relationship is neutral, so the tone rests mostly on where the two sit in your own chart. It is a mid-length sub-period, long enough to show its own colour.
When in the Rahu mahadasha do results show most?
The tradition times a planet's results within its period by the part of its sign it occupies at birth: a planet in the first third of its sign is read as giving its results early in the period, the middle third in the middle, and the last third toward the end. The order reverses for a retrograde planet and for the nodes. Sub-periods add a finer rhythm on top, and transits of slow planets such as Saturn and Jupiter add another. The kundli timeline shows which third applies to your own period.
How do I find my Rahu mahadasha dates?
Your dasha dates come from the Moon's exact position at birth. The nakshatra the Moon occupied sets which period you were born into, and how far the Moon had travelled through it sets how much of that period was already used. Everything after follows the fixed sequence. The Vimshottari dasha calculator lists your Rahu period and its sub-periods, and the form on this page shows when yours runs, if it falls in your lifetime.
How this is calculated
Nirayana rashis with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsha and whole-sign bhavas, computed to arc-second accuracy. Sunrise and sunset are the ones almanacs show, the Sun's upper edge with refraction, so the daily windows agree with the calendars you compare them with. More on our method.
