Rashi by Name Calculator

A rashi by name calculator reads the first sound of a name against the namkaran syllable table, where each of the 108 nakshatra padas carries one syllable and every nine padas fill one rashi. The rashi that sound falls in is the naam rashi. It is not the chandra rashi, which comes from where the Moon actually stood at birth, and the tradition keeps both readings side by side.

  • Your naam rashi from the first sound of any name
  • Roman or Hindi: type मनीष or Manish
  • The nakshatra pada the syllable comes from
  • Every possible rashi when a spelling is ambiguous

Naam rashi · the naming syllable

Whose name is it?

Only the first sound is used; the rest of the name is read and discarded.

Rashi by Name Calculator, explained

What the tool reads, how it reads it, and what the answer can and cannot be used for.

What is naam rashi, and where does it come from?

Naam rashi (नाम राशि) is the rashi a person's name falls in, read from the first syllable of the name and nothing else. The table behind it is the namkaran table: the zodiac holds 27 nakshatras of four padas each, 108 padas in all, and each pada carries one naming syllable. Nine padas fill one rashi of thirty degrees, so the nine syllables of Ashwini, Bharani and the first pada of Krittika (Chu, Che, Cho, La, Lee, Lu, Le, Lo and A) are the nine syllables of Mesha. The whole familiar table is that one arithmetic repeated twelve times, which is why this calculator derives it from the nakshatra padas rather than storing a second copy of it.

Is naam rashi the same as my Moon rashi?

No, and the difference matters more than anything else on this page. Chandra rashi is the sign the Moon actually occupied at the moment of birth, computed from a date, a time and a place. Naam rashi is the sign the name's first sound belongs to in the syllable table. When a child was named in the classical way, with the first syllable taken from the pada the Moon stood in, the two agree by construction, because the name was built from the Moon. When the name was chosen for any other reason, which is now the usual case, they simply differ, and neither one is a mistake. Panditji will often ask for both before a sankalp.

Which of the two a reading uses

Classical practice is unambiguous on this: a chart reading, a dasha calculation, a gochar reading and a matching all use the chandra rashi, because all of them are built on the Moon's longitude and a name has no longitude. The naam rashi is used where the person is being addressed rather than the chart being read: in a sankalp, in temple practice, in the rashi name a family uses alongside the everyday name. Where you see the two used interchangeably, what has usually happened is that the birth time was unavailable and the name was pressed into service as a stand-in.

What to do when you have no birth time

The honest answer is that the naam rashi is a substitute, and the tradition treats it as one. If the birth date and place are known but the time is not, a great deal is still fixed for the whole day (the Sun's rashi, the slower grahas, often the Moon's rashi itself), and only the lagna and the exact Moon degree are open. Our birth chart without a birth time page computes exactly that split for a date and a place, and it is a stronger starting point than a name.

How does this calculator read a name?

By the longest prefix that appears in the syllable table, on a normalised spelling. Roman transliteration of Indian names has no single standard. The same name is written Deepak and Dipak, Lakshmi and Lakshmee, Vinay and Winay, so long vowels are folded to short, w is read as v, and the compound sounds English writes with an h are kept whole: ch, chh, sh, th, dh, bh, kh, gh, ph and jh are each one sound and are matched as one. Longest prefix means a name opening Bho is read as Bho and not as Bha or as B, which is the difference between Makara and Dhanu. The pada that carried the matched syllable is shown beside the rashi, so the working is visible rather than asserted.

Why do some names give two different rashis?

Because the table is a table of Devanagari letters and a roman spelling throws away the letter. Sanskrit has two t sounds and two d sounds (the retroflex ट and ड, and the dental त and द), and the namkaran table sends them to different rashis. "Ta" written in roman could be त, which sits in Simha, or ट, which sits in Tula. "Da" is worse: it appears in Karka, in Kumbha and in Meena depending on the letter. When your name's opening sound is one of these, this calculator shows every rashi the sound belongs to rather than picking one and hoping. Type the first letter in Devanagari and the ambiguity disappears, because the letter is the thing the table was written about.

Can I type a name in Hindi?

Yes. If the first character is Devanagari, this calculator reads the first akshara (the consonant plus whatever matra is attached to it) and matches that, ignoring everything after it. So मनीष is read as म plus the ी matra, which is "mee", and राधा is read as रा. That is the reading the table was built for and it settles the ट-versus-त and ड-versus-द questions outright. A name typed in roman letters is normalised first and then matched the same way; the only difference is that roman input can land on two rashis at once and Devanagari input cannot.

What can a naam rashi actually be used for?

The tradition uses it in three places and no more. In a sankalp, where the person performing a rite names themselves by gotra, nakshatra and rashi. In temple and family practice, where a rashi name chosen from the pada syllable sits alongside the everyday name. And as a stand-in where the Moon's position is genuinely unavailable. What it is not used for is a chart reading. A dasha sequence needs the Moon's longitude to the minute; a gochar reading needs the Moon's rashi; a matching needs the Moon's nakshatra and pada. None of those can be recovered from a name, and this page will not pretend otherwise.

How do I find my real chandra rashi instead?

With a birth date, a birth time and a birth place, which is all the Moon's position needs. The Moon moves about thirteen degrees a day, so it changes rashi roughly every two and a quarter days and changes nakshatra roughly every day, which is why the birth time matters here far more than it does for the Sun. Our Moon sign calculator gives the chandra rashi with the degree, the nakshatra calculator gives the janma nakshatra and its pada, and the full kundli gives both inside the whole chart. All three are computed with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsha.

Does the rashi lord shown here mean anything?

It means what lordship always means: the graha the classical texts assign to that rashi: Mangal for Mesha and Vrishchika, Shukra for Vrishabha and Tula, Budha for Mithuna and Kanya, Chandra for Karka, Surya for Simha, Guru for Dhanu and Meena, Shani for Makara and Kumbha. It is shown because the reader almost always wants it and because a rashi without its lord is half a fact. It is not shown as a statement about the person: a lordship read from a name is read from a syllable table, and the texts that describe what a rashi lord does are describing a graha standing somewhere in a chart, which a name does not give you.

FAQ

Rashi by Name Calculator FAQs

Short answers about the tool and the tradition behind it.

The quickest answer is your own. It takes a few seconds and no birth details.

Find the naam rashi
How do I find my rashi by name?

Take the first syllable of the name and look it up in the namkaran table, where each of the 108 nakshatra padas carries one syllable and nine padas fill one rashi. Enter the name above and this calculator does the lookup, showing the pada the syllable came from.

Is rashi by name accurate?

Rashi by name is accurate as a lookup in the naming table, and no more. It gives the naam rashi, which matches the Moon's rashi only when the name was chosen from the birth nakshatra in the classical way. For a reading, use the chandra rashi from a birth chart.

What is the difference between naam rashi and chandra rashi?

Naam rashi comes from the first syllable of the name; chandra rashi comes from the Moon's actual position at birth. They agree when the name was built from the birth nakshatra's pada syllable, and differ whenever the name was chosen some other way.

Which rashi does the letter A belong to?

A is the ninth syllable of Mesha, carried by the first pada of Krittika. The syllables written I, U, E and O follow it into Vrishabha, which is why names beginning with a bare vowel split across the first two rashis rather than sitting in one.

Why does my name show two rashis?

Roman spelling cannot tell the retroflex ट and ड from the dental त and द, and the namkaran table sends them to different rashis. Both are shown rather than one being guessed. Typing the first letter in Devanagari resolves it immediately.

Can I change my rashi by changing my name?

The naam rashi follows the name, so a new name with a different first syllable has a different naam rashi. The chandra rashi does not move, because the Moon's position at birth does not move. The tradition reads the two as separate things.

Does this calculator need my birth details?

No. It reads the name's first sound and nothing else, which is the whole of the namkaran rule. If you have a birth date and place but no time, the chart page for a missing birth time will tell you far more than a name can.

What is a rashi name?

A rashi name is a second name chosen from the syllable of the pada the Moon occupied at birth, given at the namkaran and used in ritual while an everyday name is used elsewhere. Where a family keeps one, the naam rashi and the chandra rashi agree.
