27 Nakshatra List With Lords, Rashis and Name Letters

The 27 nakshatras are the lunar mansions of Vedic astrology: equal segments of 13°20' along the sidereal zodiac, each ruled by a planet, presided over by a deity and split into four padas with a name letter each. The nakshatra the Moon was in at your birth sets your Vimshottari dasha, your baby name letter and most of your marriage matching score.

Rashi with nakshatra list

Which nakshatras are in each rashi?

A rashi of 30° holds two and a quarter nakshatras, so the nakshatras at either end of a sign are split between neighbours by pada.

Guide

The 27 nakshatras, explained

Why the finer division matters for dasha, matching and the name letter.

  1. Why does the nakshatra matter more than the rashi?

A rashi is 30 degrees wide, a nakshatra 13°20' and a pada just 3°20', and the finer division carries more of the classical technique. Vimshottari dasha, the timing system most Indian astrologers use, is worked out entirely from the Moon's nakshatra and how far through it the Moon had travelled.

  2. How are nakshatras used in marriage matching?

Four of the eight kootas in Guna Milan read the nakshatra directly: Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi. Nadi alone is worth 8 of the 36 points, so an error of one nakshatra can move a score a long way. South Indian porutham matching reads the two birth nakshatras as well.

  3. What are gana, nadi and yoni?

They are three fixed classifications of every nakshatra. Gana sorts the 27 into Deva, Manushya and Rakshasa temperaments; nadi into Aadi, Madhya and Antya constitutions; and yoni gives each an animal, read as instinctive compatibility. They describe the nakshatra, and a chart is read as a whole.

Nakshatra questions, answered

Short answers about the 27 nakshatras, their lords and name letters.

The quickest answer is your own birth star. It takes a date, a time and a place.

Find my nakshatra
How many nakshatras are there?

There are 27 nakshatras, each spanning 13 degrees 20 minutes of the sidereal zodiac and divided into four padas of 3°20'. Some traditions count a twenty-eighth, Abhijit, between Uttara Ashadha and Shravana, but it is not used in the standard Vimshottari dasha or Guna Milan calculations.

What are the names of the 27 nakshatras?

The 27 nakshatras, in order, are Ashwini, Bharani, Krittika, Rohini, Mrigashira, Ardra, Punarvasu, Pushya, Ashlesha, Magha, Purva Phalguni, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Vishakha, Anuradha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Purva Ashadha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati. The list starts at 0 degrees of Mesh rashi with Ashwini and ends with Revati at the close of Meen.

What is my birth nakshatra?

Your birth nakshatra, or janma nakshatra, is the nakshatra the Moon occupied at the moment you were born. The Moon crosses one in about a day, so an accurate birth time matters, most of all when the Moon sat near a boundary. A nakshatra calculator finds it, with the pada, from your birth details.

Why does the nakshatra decide the Vimshottari dasha?

Each nakshatra has a ruling planet, and the Vimshottari sequence begins with that planet's period. How far the Moon had already travelled through the nakshatra sets how much of the first period remains, so two people born on the same day can begin life in the same mahadasha with very different amounts of it left.

What are nakshatra name letters?

Nakshatra name letters are the four syllables, one per pada, that the naming tradition gives each nakshatra. At the namkaran ceremony a child is given a name beginning with the syllable of the pada the Moon occupied at birth. That is why the pada matters as well as the nakshatra.
