MANGLIK / KUJA DOSHA मंगल दोष

Mangal Dosha Calculator

Mangal Dosha, also called Manglik or Kuja Dosha, means Mars occupies the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, counted from the ascendant, the Moon and Venus. The same texts that define it also define its cancellations, so the honest answer is a graded one rather than a yes or no.

Mangal Dosha guide

Mangal Dosha explained

Short answers to the questions people ask, with the reasoning behind each.

What does Mangal Dosha mean?

Mangal Dosha means Mars sits in one of five houses, the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th, counted from the reference point being used. Mangal is Mars; dosha means a blemish or fault, not a curse. The reasoning behind it is plain enough: Mars is the graha of heat, assertion and impatience, and those five houses touch the self, the home, the spouse, the endurance of the union and the privacy of a marriage. Put a hot graha on one of them and the texts expect friction. Two things belong in the same breath as that definition, because leaving them out is how the term does harm. First, the same classical sources that define the dosha define its bhanga: a list of cancellations, several of which are common, and any of which can close the matter. Second, the dosha is a flag for closer examination during matching, not a verdict on a marriage: it is read next to the guna score, the 7th house, the condition of Venus and Jupiter, and the running dasha.

Which houses cause Mangal Dosha, and are they equally heavy?

No, the five houses are not equal, and grading them is most of the difference between a useful answer and a scare. The 7th and the 8th are the two the texts treat as heaviest; the 1st, the 4th and the 12th are read as moderate, and what each of the five actually governs is set out below. This calculator weighs the houses instead of counting them, so a 7th-house Mars grades higher than a 12th-house one, and it subtracts weight when Mars is dignified. That matters, because a chart flagged from one reference with Mars in the 12th and a chart flagged from all three with Mars in the 7th both return "Manglik" on a yes/no tool. They are not the same chart, and they should not get the same answer.

Mars in the 7th: kalatra bhava, the house of the partner

The heaviest of the five in every school. The 7th is kalatra bhava, the house of the partner and of the union itself, and Mars is the graha of heat and haste, so the texts expect friction where patience is wanted. It is the placement most often behind a Manglik label raised during matching. Weighed at full strength here, and reduced when Mars sits in Kark or Makar, the pairing the texts name for this house.

Mars in the 8th: ayu bhava, the endurance of the bond

The other heavy placement. The 8th is read for longevity and for what a bond has to withstand, so the classical concern is with how durable a union proves rather than with how it begins. The texts weigh it alongside the 7th and above the remaining three, and this calculator gives it the same full weight. The pairing named for the 8th is Mars in Dhanu or Meen, which the texts hold spends the dosha here.

Mars in the 1st: the lagna, and a sharp temperament

Read as a quality of the person rather than as harm to the union: Mars on the ascendant is described as directness, impatience and a short fuse, and the matching question is how that meets another temperament rather than anything about the marriage itself. Graded as moderate here. The pairing named for it is Mars in Mesh or Vrischika, its own signs, where the texts hold the same energy expresses constructively.

Mars in the 4th: sukha bhava, home and the family married into

The 4th is the house of settled domestic life, so the classical reading is of friction at home and with the family one marries into rather than between the couple. Graded as moderate. It shares the 1st house's pairing, Mars in Mesh or Vrischika, and in practice it is the placement most often softened by the condition of the 4th lord and of the Moon, which a full chart reading looks at and a yes/no tool never does.

Mars in the 12th: vyaya bhava, privacy and expense

The lightest of the five. The 12th is read for expenditure, for what is spent or withdrawn, and for the private side of a marriage, so the classical concern is with strain on privacy and on a household's spending rather than on the bond. Graded lowest here, which is why a chart flagged from the 12th alone and from a single reference comes back low rather than simply "Manglik". The pairing named for it is Mars in Vrish or Tula.

How is Mangal Dosha checked from the Lagna, the Moon and Venus?

Three reference points, each answering a different question, with the same five houses counted from each in turn. Most calculators count from the lagna alone, and that is the commonest source of a wrong answer in either direction: it misses a Mars that afflicts Venus but not the ascendant, and it over-reports a chart flagged from a single reference as though it were flagged from all three. Our report prints all three rows, names the house Mars falls in from each one, and says in plain words what that house governs. A chart afflicted from all three references is a materially different matter from one afflicted from a single reference, and the severity grade reflects exactly that.

From the lagna: the body and the temperament

The ascendant is the reference nearly every calculator uses, and counting the five houses from it asks how Mars sits with the physical constitution and the temperament. It is the right first question and a poor only question: a Mars clear of all five houses from the lagna can still fall in the 7th from Venus, and a lagna-only tool reports that chart as entirely unaffected.

From the Moon: the mind

Counting the same five houses from the natal Moon asks about manas, the mind and the emotional register, which is the level at which the tradition reads friction inside a household. The Moon is also the reference most Vedic transit work uses, so a Mangal flag taken from the Moon sits naturally beside a Sade Sati or Dhaiya reading measured from the same point in the same chart.

From Venus: the marriage itself

Venus is the karaka of marriage, so counting from Venus is the reference that asks about the union rather than about the person. It is the one most often left out, and leaving it out is why two reports on one chart can disagree: a Mars in the 8th from Venus is a classical flag that a lagna-only check never sees. Our report prints this row whether or not it fires.

Can Mangal Dosha be cancelled?

Yes, and the cancellations (dosha bhanga) are classical rather than modern softening. This calculator checks each of them against your chart and names the ones that actually apply, rather than mentioning the idea in general and leaving you to guess. The specific house-and-sign pairings Jataka Chandrika names, as Raman gives them: in the 1st in Mesh, Simha or Kumbha; in the 2nd in Mesh, Vrischika, Mithun or Kanya; in the 4th in Mesh, Vrischika, Vrish or Tula; in the 7th in Kark or Makar; in the 8th in Dhanu or Meen; in the 12th in Vrish or Tula. The 2nd-house pairing matters only on a site that counts the 2nd, which this calculator shows but does not score. Further rules, set out below, apply whichever house Mars occupies: a dignified Mars, Jupiter's or Mercury's contact with Mars, Mars in a movable sign, and both partners carrying the dosha to a similar degree. Any one of them can close the matter.

Mars in its own sign or exalted

Mars holds Mesh and Vrischika as its own signs and is exalted in Makar. The texts hold that a dignified graha gives its results constructively, so a Mars in any of those three spends most of the dosha wherever it sits. This is the cancellation with the broadest reach, because it turns only on the sign Mars occupies and not on which house that sign happens to be in your chart. Our report subtracts weight for it and says so.

Jupiter conjunct Mars, or aspecting it

The most widely accepted bhanga of all. Jupiter in the same sign as Mars, or throwing its 5th, 7th or 9th drishti onto Mars, is held to temper it, Jupiter being the graha of restraint and good counsel set against Mars's heat. Practitioners who accept almost nothing else as a cancellation generally accept this one, and our report names it explicitly when Jupiter is in contact with a Mars in a dosha house.

Both partners carrying the dosha

The rule most often overlooked, and the one most commonly applied in real matching: when both charts are Manglik the dosha is traditionally held to balance, and the point is closed there. It costs nothing to check and it settles more cases than every other cancellation put together, which is why it belongs before any discussion of remedies rather than after one. Our matching report shows the flag for both charts side by side.

What is Mangal Dosha called in Hindi and other Indian languages?

मंगल दोष (Mangal Dosh) is the Hindi, and a person carrying it is मांगलिक (Manglik). The same placement travels under several names across India. Kuja Dosha is the Sanskrit and the usual term in Telugu and Kannada (Kuja is a name for Mars). Sevvai Dosham is the Tamil, Chovva Dosham the Malayalam, and Angarak Dosha another Sanskrit form, from angaraka, the ember. Marathi and Gujarati usage follows the Hindi. The names differ; the calculation does not. Every one of them means Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th, counted from a stated reference. What genuinely does differ by region is which houses get counted, and that is worth knowing before you compare two answers: several South Indian traditions add the 2nd house to the list, which is the subject of the next section.

Why do two sites disagree about whether I am Manglik?

Almost always because of the 2nd house. Most of North India judges the dosha from the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th only, and that is what we score. Several South Indian traditions add the 2nd, the house of family and speech, so a chart with Mars there is Manglik under one school's rules and clear under the other's. We do not hide that: when Mars falls in the 2nd from any of your three references, the report says so explicitly and names the school that would call it a dosha. The second common cause is the reference point, since a site checking only the lagna will disagree with one that also checks the Moon and Venus. The third is the ayanamsha, which can move Mars across a sign boundary for a birth near the cusp. We use Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), so a site on a different one disagrees with us on exactly those births and no others. None of these is a bug; they are stated conventions. The site to distrust is the one that will not tell you which convention it uses.

What does Mangal Dosha mean for kundali matching?

In matching it is scored separately from the 36 gunas, and it works as a flag for a closer look rather than as a rejection. The conventional handling is simple: if both partners are Manglik the dosha is held to balance and the point is closed; if only one is, the tradition asks for a fuller reading of both charts before anything else is decided. That fuller reading means the 7th house and its lord, the condition of Venus and Jupiter, whether the two charts show marriage timing in the same years, and the dashas each is running. A high guna score with weak 7th houses is a weaker match than the number suggests, and a Mangal flag with three cancellations applying is a lighter matter than the label sounds. Our Kundali Matching reports Mangal Dosha for both charts next to the guna total, because the two are meant to be read together.

What remedies does the tradition prescribe for Mangal Dosha?

The report itself carries the traditional list, with a caveat worth repeating here: we give these because they are what the tradition prescribes, not as a prescription of our own. Before marriage the texts name the symbolic pariharas (Kumbha Vivah, Vishnu Vivah, Ashwatha Vivah), performed to take the dosha onto an object rather than a spouse. After marriage, the recitations associated with Mangal, chiefly the Hanuman Chalisa, since Hanuman is the deity of Mars. The Lal Kitab tradition adds its own plain upaya, such as feeding birds something sweet. Three things should be said flatly. Nothing on this site costs anything, and no ritual is required by us or by anyone reading your chart honestly. The cheapest remedy the texts give is the one most often skipped: check whether the other chart is Manglik too, because that cancellation closes the question outright. And speak to an astrologer who has read the whole chart before commissioning anything at all.

Does Mangal Dosha reduce with age, and what is double Manglik?

Two popular claims worth separating from what the texts actually say, because both circulate as though they were classical and neither one is. They are examined in turn below. What the classical machinery does support is grading: how many references flag Mars, which house Mars occupies, what dignity it holds, and which cancellations apply. That is the report this page gives you, and it says more than a label ever could: a single mild flag with two cancellations applying, and a Mars in the 7th flagged from all three references, are different findings, and only a graded answer can tell them apart.

The claim that the dosha lapses at 28

Twenty-eight is the number most often quoted, sometimes thirty-six, and it has no basis in the classical rules: the dosha is defined by a house position, and Mars is where it was at birth for as long as the chart exists. What is traditionally held is that a match made later, once the running dasha has moved past a Mars or Ketu period, meets less of the friction. That is a statement about timing, not about a placement expiring.

"Double Manglik" is not a classical category

The phrase usually means Mars flagged from two references, or a Mars afflicting two of the five houses at once, but it has no agreed definition and no classical source, which is why two sites using it can mean different things by it. It is worth asking anyone who uses the term which of the two they mean. The graded severity here carries the same information without the label: how many references fired, and which house Mars sits in.

How this is calculated

Nirayana rashis with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsha and whole-sign bhavas, computed to arc-second accuracy. Sunrise and sunset are the ones almanacs show, the Sun's upper edge with refraction, so the daily windows agree with the calendars you compare them with. More on our method.

Check Mangal Dosha
What does Mangal Dosha mean?

Mangal Dosha means Mars occupies the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of a chart. Mangal is Mars, and dosha means a blemish or fault rather than a curse. It is traditionally treated as one factor in marriage matching, and the same texts that define it also list the conditions that cancel it.

What does Mangal Dosha mean in Hindi?

मंगल दोष is the Hindi, and a person carrying it is called मांगलिक (Manglik). The same placement is Kuja Dosha in Sanskrit, Telugu and Kannada, Sevvai Dosham in Tamil, Chovva Dosham in Malayalam, and Angarak Dosha in another Sanskrit usage. The names differ by region; the calculation is identical.

Which house of Mars is most Manglik?

The 7th and the 8th are considered the heaviest. The 7th is the house of the spouse and the 8th governs the endurance of the bond, so the texts weigh both above the rest. Mars in the 1st, 4th or 12th is treated as moderate, and this calculator grades them rather than counting them equally.

How do I check Mangal Dosha in my kundli?

Find the house Mars occupies, counted three times over: from the ascendant, from the Moon, and from Venus. If it lands in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th from any of them, the dosha is flagged from that reference. Then check the cancellations, because several are common. The calculator above does both steps.

Is Mangal Dosha cancelled if both partners are Manglik?

Yes, both partners being Manglik is the most widely applied cancellation. Two Manglik charts are traditionally held to balance one another, and matching practice closes the point there. It is also the cheapest remedy the tradition offers, which is why it is worth checking the other chart before commissioning any ritual for the dosha.

Does Mangal Dosha decide whether a marriage works?

No, Mangal Dosha is one factor among many in traditional matching, and it carries several recognised cancellations: a dignified Mars, Jupiter's aspect on Mars, particular house-and-sign pairings, and both partners carrying it. It is read alongside the guna score, the 7th house and the running dasha, never on its own.

Is Mangal Dosha checked from the Moon or the ascendant?

Both, and from Venus as well. The lagna answers for the body, the Moon for the mind, and Venus for the marriage itself. Checking the ascendant alone is the commonest shortcut and the commonest source of a wrong answer, because it misses a Mars that afflicts Venus and over-reports a chart flagged from one reference only.

Does the 2nd house count in Mangal Dosha?

Whether the 2nd house counts depends on the school, which is why two sites disagree about the same chart. Most of North India counts the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th only, which is what we score. Several South Indian traditions add the 2nd house. When Mars falls in your 2nd, our report tells you so and names the difference rather than hiding it.

What are the remedies for Mangal Dosha?

The tradition prescribes symbolic pariharas before marriage (Kumbha Vivah, Vishnu Vivah, Ashwatha Vivah) and recitations associated with Mars afterwards, chiefly the Hanuman Chalisa. We list them because they are what the tradition gives, not as a prescription of our own. Check the cancellations first: a dosha already cancelled needs nothing bought for it.

What do high, medium and low Manglik severity mean?

The grade combines how many of the three references flag Mars with which house Mars sits in. A 7th- or 8th-house Mars carries double the weight of a 1st, 4th or 12th, and a Mars in its own sign or exalted subtracts weight. High means several references flagged with Mars in a heavy house; low means a single mild flag.
