How the signs are grouped, who rules them, and how they meet the nakshatras.

How are the 12 rashis grouped?
Every rashi pairs one of four elements (tattva) with one of three qualities. The elements are fire, earth, air and water; the qualities are movable (chara), fixed (sthira) and dual (dwiswabhava). The two cycles run against each other, so no two rashis share both, and the pairing gives a sign its raw character before any planet is placed in it.

Why does the rashi lord matter so much?
A rashi describes a field and its lord decides what grows in it. Seven planets own the twelve signs: the Sun and Moon one each, the other five two each. Where the lord sits in a chart, how strong it is and when its dasha runs matter more to a reading than the sign on its own. Rahu and Ketu own no sign.

How do rashis and nakshatras fit together?
The same circle is divided twice: twelve rashis of 30 degrees and twenty-seven nakshatras of 13°20'. A rashi holds two and a quarter nakshatras, so the padas at either end of each sign are shared with its neighbours. Dasha, marriage matching and the naming ceremony all read the finer nakshatra.

Is my rashi my Sun sign or my Moon sign?
In Vedic astrology your rashi is your Moon sign. Jyotish reads the chandra rashi, the sign the Moon held at your birth, for dasha, transits and marriage matching. The Moon crosses a rashi in about two and a quarter days, so the birth date alone cannot settle it and the birth time is needed.
Why do Vedic rashi dates differ from Western zodiac dates?
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, fixed to the stars, while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, fixed to the equinox. The two have drifted about 24 degrees apart, so the sidereal Sun enters each sign roughly three weeks later. Indian panchang and festival dates, such as Makar Sankranti, follow the sidereal reckoning.
Which planet rules each rashi?
Mars rules Mesh and Vrishchik, Venus rules Vrishabh and Tula, Mercury rules Mithun and Kanya, the Moon rules Kark, the Sun rules Singh, Jupiter rules Dhanu and Meen, and Saturn rules Makar and Kumbh. Rahu and Ketu own no rashi and act through the lord of the sign they occupy.
How do I find my rashi?
You find your rashi from your birth date, time and place. A Moon sign calculator works out where the Moon stood at that moment and reads the sign it was in. A name can give a naam rashi from its first letter, but that is a naming convention, not the position of the Moon at birth.
