01What does nivaran mean for Mangal dosha?
Nivaran means removal or setting aside, and in the matching texts it has two parts in a fixed sequence. First come the cancellations, dosha bhanga, the conditions under which the texts say the dosha does not apply at all. Only where none of those holds do the texts turn to the remedies, the observances a family may keep before and after the wedding. Most pages on this subject begin with the second and skip the first, which is backwards, because a cancellation that applies closes the matter and costs nothing. The remedies below are listed as what the tradition prescribes, not as a prescription of our own, and no effect of any of them has been measured or demonstrated. The Mangal dosha calculator grades one chart; this page reads two together, since the rule most often decisive needs both.
02Which Mangal dosha cancellations do the texts give, and in which text?
Every cancellation the report applies carries the name of the text it is taken from. There are five sources and seven rules.
Jataka Parijata: Mars in a movable sign, or with Mercury
Mars in Mesha, Karka, Tula or Makara, the four movable signs, is held not to give the dosha, and so is Mars in the same sign as Mercury. Both rules turn on the sign Mars occupies and not on the house.
Muhurta Chintamani: dignity, and Jupiter
Mars in its own signs, Mesha and Vrischika, or exalted in Makara, is read as giving its results constructively. Jupiter in the same sign as Mars, or aspecting it by the fifth, seventh or ninth, is held to temper it. These are the two cancellations accepted most widely.
Jataka Chandrika: the house-and-sign table
The table as B. V. Raman gives it: Mars in the first house in Mesha, Simha or Kumbha; in the second in Mesha, Vrischika, Mithuna or Kanya; in the fourth in Mesha, Vrischika, Vrishabha or Tula; in the seventh in Karka or Makara; in the eighth in Dhanu or Meena; in the twelfth in Vrishabha or Tula. The report checks the row for the house Mars occupies.
Garga: a debilitated Mars
Mars in Karka, its sign of debilitation, is held by Garga to be too weak to give the dosha. The rule is less often applied than the others and the report says whose it is.
Both partners carrying the dosha
The rule most commonly applied in real matching: when both charts carry the dosha, the tradition holds the two to balance, mangal samya, and the question is closed there. The report weighs the two by reference, from the lagna, the Moon and Venus, and says whether they balance.
03Is Mangal dosha cancelled after 28?
Not in any text the report can name. The claim that the dosha lapses at twenty-eight, sometimes thirty-six, is later practice: the dosha is defined by the house Mars occupies, and Mars is where it was at birth for as long as the chart exists. What the tradition does hold is a statement about timing, that a match made after the running dasha has moved past a Mars period meets less of the friction. The report shows the age claim as a note, in the words of the practice that holds it, and leaves the grading as the texts leave it. The same goes for two other popular rules: Mars with Saturn or Rahu cancelling the dosha has no classical source, and the report does not apply it.
04What remedies does the tradition prescribe for Mangal dosha?
Where the dosha stands in one chart and no cancellation applies, the tradition prescribes a Mangal shanti, the propitiation of Mars performed before the wedding; a Tuesday observance, the weekday of Mars, kept as a fast or a temple visit; recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa, Hanuman being the deity associated with Mars; and red daan, the gift of things of Mars's colour, red cloth, masoor dal or jaggery, to those in need. We list these because they are what the tradition prescribes, not as a prescription of our own. No effect of any of them has been measured or demonstrated, and nothing here is sold. Red coral, the stone of Mars, belongs to the gemstone tradition's own rule that a stone is worn only after a reading of the whole chart, since it strengthens Mars rather than pacifying it; no stone is recommended on this page and none is sold. The texts' own first instruction is to check the cancellations and the other chart, which the report does before it shows this list.
05What is Kumbh vivah, and is it in the texts?
Kumbh vivah is a symbolic wedding performed before the real one, in which the partner carrying the dosha is first married to a clay pot, a Vishnu image or a peepal tree, the Kumbh, Vishnu and Ashwattha forms, so that the dosha is held to fall on the object. It is a living custom in some families, not a rule of the texts, and it is contested: many practitioners decline it, some families keep it, and the matching texts that define the dosha do not prescribe it. We describe it because readers ask about it, not as a prescription of our own, and no effect of it has been measured or demonstrated. A family considering it should ask its own priest, who will know whether it is part of that family's practice at all.
06How does the report read Mangal dosha for both partners?
Mars is checked from three references in each chart, the lagna, the Moon and Venus, in the houses the texts name, the first, second, fourth, seventh, eighth and twelfth, with the second shown but not scored, as most northern practice has it. Each reference carries a weight, and the report grades the dosha rather than labelling it, since a single mild flag with two cancellations applying and a Mars in the seventh flagged from all three references are different findings. The two gradings are then set side by side for mangal samya. All of this sits in the full kundli milan report beside the thirty-six points, never apart from them.
07What will this page not tell you?
It will not say what is going to happen to two people, and it will not say that a remedy works. The dosha is a position of Mars read against a table, the cancellations are rules the texts attach to that table, and the remedies are what the tradition prescribes where the rules run out. The report names each with its text and stops. Where the dosha stands in one chart with no cancellation, the tradition's instruction is a chart reading by an astrologer who reads the seventh house and the navamsa, and that is the instruction the report repeats.
