01What is Nadi in kundli matching?
Nadi is the eighth and heaviest koota of Ashtakoota guna milan, worth 8 of the 36 points. The twenty-seven nakshatras are dealt into three nadis in a fixed running sequence, and each partner's nadi is read from the nakshatra of the Moon at birth. The three are named for the three prakritis of the body, the constitutions the Ayurvedic tradition calls vata, pitta and kapha. The matching texts give full marks when the two nadis differ and nothing when they are the same. That is the whole of the rule: the nakshatra alone, read against one table. The sections below give the table, the exemptions the texts attach to it and what the report does with each.
02Which nakshatras fall in Adi, Madhya and Antya nadi?
The table the report applies, with each nadi's prakriti beside it: Aadi (vata) (): Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada; Madhya (pitta) (): Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishta, Uttara Bhadrapada; Antya (kapha) (): Krittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Revati. The sequence runs forward through the first nine stars, back through the next nine and forward again through the last nine, which is why two stars standing next to each other can share a nadi. The names are the Sanskrit for first, middle and last, and the three constitutions are the tradition's own gloss on them. Find either partner's nakshatra on the nakshatra calculator if you do not already have it.
03What does the tradition read Nadi dosha as?
The texts read the same nadi on both sides as the same constitution twice over, with nothing on the other side to balance it. That is a statement about prakriti, the temperament and the physical make-up the Ayurvedic tradition describes, and the classical writers treat it as a want of complement between two natures rather than as a forecast of anything. The report keeps to that reading. A great deal is said about Nadi dosha online that is not in the texts, and the fear around it comes mostly from there. What the report can say honestly is which nadi each Moon falls in, whether the two match, and which of the texts' exemptions, if any, applies to the pair.
04Which stars does the Narada Samhita exempt from Nadi dosha?
The Narada Samhita names nakshatras in which a shared star is not read as Nadi dosha at all. The list as it is usually quoted runs Rohini, Ardra, Pushya, Magha, Vishakha, Shravana, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati, and some editions add Mrigashira, Hasta and Anuradha. The report applies the list it carries and names the star it matched, so the exemption never appears as a bare pass. Where the two Moons share a nakshatra that is not on the list, the exemption is not claimed, whatever else is said about the pair.
05Which Nadi cancellations do the Jyotirnibandha and the Muhurta Ganapati give?
Three cancellations are classical and each is named by its text when the report applies it. The Jyotirnibandha sets Nadi dosha aside when both Moons stand in the same rashi but in different nakshatras, and again when they share a nakshatra that falls in two different rashis. The Muhurta Ganapati adds a rule read from the lords: when the lords of the two Moon signs are the same graha or natural friends, the same nadi is not held against the pair. Each of these turns on something the chart states plainly, a rashi, a nakshatra or a lord, so the report can show its working rather than ask to be believed.
Same rashi, different nakshatra
The Moon's sign is the same on both sides and the stars differ. The Jyotirnibandha reads the shared rashi as the stronger fact and sets the nadi aside. The report names the rashi.
Same nakshatra, different rashi
Nine of the twenty-seven stars straddle a sign boundary. When both Moons sit in one of them but on either side of the boundary, the same text sets the dosha aside. The report names the star and both rashis.
Friendly lords
The Muhurta Ganapati looks past the stars to the lords of the two Moon signs. The same lord, or two lords in natural friendship, cancels the dosha. The report names both lords and the relation between them.
06Is Nadi dosha cancelled when the pada is different?
This is the rule most often quoted and the one with no text behind it. Some later practice holds that the same nakshatra in a different pada is not Nadi dosha. None of the classical sources the report draws on says so: the Jyotirnibandha speaks of the rashi, not the pada, and the Narada list is a list of stars, not of quarters. The report therefore shows the different-pada case as a note, in the words of the practice that holds it, and leaves the score as the texts leave it. A page that silently restores eight points on the strength of a pada is giving a kinder number, not a truer one.
07What remedies does the tradition prescribe for Nadi dosha?
Where the dosha stands and no exemption applies, the tradition prescribes a Nadi shanti, a propitiation performed before the wedding and usually read as part of the wider graha shanti. The recitation named with it is the Mahamrityunjaya japa, and in some traditions the shanti closes with a gift of gold, swarna daan, made to a priest or a temple. We list these because they are what the tradition prescribes, not as a prescription of our own. No effect of any of them has been measured or demonstrated, and nothing here is sold. The texts' own first instruction comes before any of this: check the exemptions above, since a cancellation that applies closes the matter, and take both charts to an astrologer who reads the seventh house and the navamsa rather than the koota alone.
08What will this page not tell you?
It will not say what is going to happen to two people. Nadi is one row of a table read from one point in each chart, and the classical writers who set the table down treated it as a filter to be read beside the whole chart, never as a verdict. The report gives the nadi of each Moon, the exemption that applies if one does, the later-practice note where it is relevant, and the other seven kootas and both Mangal checks beside it, so the eight points are seen in their place. Where the reading is unfavourable the tradition's instruction is a chart reading, and that is the instruction the report repeats.
