KETU MAHADASHA · 7 YEARS केतु महादशा

Ketu Mahadasha Effects

The Ketu mahadasha is the seven-year main period of Ketu, the south node. The tradition reads it as a time of release rather than acquisition: endings, detachment, inner work and interest turning inward, shaped by the house Ketu sits in and the planet that rules its sign.

Ketu mahadasha explained

Short answers to the questions people ask, with the reasoning behind each.

What is the Ketu mahadasha?

The Ketu mahadasha is Ketu's main period in the Vimshottari dasha system, which divides a 120-year cycle among the nine planets in a fixed order. Ketu's share is 7 years. In the sequence it follows the Mercury mahadasha and comes before the Venus mahadasha. Where a person enters the cycle depends on the nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth, so one person may begin life in the Ketu period while another reaches it in later years, or not at all within a lifetime.

What does the Ketu mahadasha bring?

Ketu is a shadow planet, the south node of the Moon, read as detachment, past learning, intuition and spiritual release. Its period is linked in the tradition with endings that make room for something new, interest in spiritual or technical depth, and a quieter, more inward life. Because Ketu owns no sign, its period is read through its house and dispositor. Being seven years long, it is often read as a corridor between two larger chapters, the Mercury period before it and the Venus period after.

What does the Ketu mahadasha bring in each house?

Ketu owns no sign, so its period is read mainly through the house it occupies, together with the ruler of the sign it sits in. The table gives the tradition's reading of Ketu in each of the twelve houses, which is what its period is read as bringing forward. Houses are counted whole-sign from the ascendant (a cusp-based system such as Placidus or Bhava Chalit can move a planet near a sign edge into the next house).

Where Ketu sitsWhat the period brings forward
1st houseA detached, introspective self: intuition, spiritual interest and an unusual presence, with self-doubt to work through.
2nd houseDetachment from money and family: unusual speech, sudden changes in finances, and simple tastes.
3rd houseCourage without fuss: intuitive skill, effortless initiative and success in technical or spiritual pursuits.
4th houseDetachment at home: changes of residence, and inner peace sought through spiritual means.
5th houseA deep, intuitive intelligence: spiritual or technical study, with children read as an area of care.
6th houseStrong against rivals and obstacles: precise work, healing skills and success in competition.
7th houseDetachment in partnership: a partner with a spiritual or unusual nature, and a relationship that asks for presence and attention.
8th houseIntuition and occult depth: interest in mysteries, research and inner transformation.
9th houseA spiritual bent and unconventional beliefs: pilgrimage, and independence from inherited tradition.
10th houseAn unusual career path: technical, research or spiritual work, with detachment from status.
11th houseGains without attachment: income from unusual sources and a small but meaningful circle.
12th houseKetu in the house of liberation: spirituality, retreat, foreign places and detachment from material concerns.

What makes the Ketu mahadasha favourable or difficult?

The tradition reads the Ketu period through four things. Its house: like other harsh planets, Ketu is read as doing best in the houses of growth, the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th, and as hardest in the 8th and 12th. Its dispositor, the ruler of its sign: a strong, well-placed dispositor steers the period constructively. Its company: a planet joined with Ketu is read as giving its own colour to the period. And Jupiter's aspect on Ketu is read as protective. The kundli reading weighs these for your chart.

What are the antardashas in the Ketu mahadasha?

Every main period is divided into nine sub-periods (antardashas), one for each planet, in the same fixed order, starting with Ketu's own. Each lasts in proportion to its planet's share of the cycle. The tradition reads a sub-period through its own planet, and through where that planet sits counted from Ketu in your chart: in a pillar or luck house from it the two are read as cooperating, while 6th, 8th or 12th from it they are read as pulling in different directions.

Ketu antardasha in Ketu mahadasha: 4 months 27 days

The period opens with its own sub-period, 4 months 27 days long, in which Ketu's themes of detachment, endings and inner work show most plainly. The tradition reads how this first stretch goes as a guide to the tone of the whole period, and the start of the period as worth watching closely.

Venus antardasha in Ketu mahadasha: 1 year 2 months

Venus brings its themes of relationships, comfort, the arts and vehicles into Ketu's period of detachment, endings and inner work, for 1 year 2 months, the 2nd of nine sub-periods. Their natural relationship is neutral, so the tone rests mostly on where the two sit in your own chart. It is a mid-length sub-period, long enough to show its own colour.

Sun antardasha in Ketu mahadasha: 4 months 6 days

The Sun brings its themes of visibility, authority and the father into Ketu's period of detachment, endings and inner work, for 4 months 6 days, the 3rd of nine sub-periods. Their natural relationship is neutral, so the tone rests mostly on where the two sit in your own chart. Being short, it is read as a passing note within the larger period.

Moon antardasha in Ketu mahadasha: 7 months

The Moon brings its themes of the mind, the mother, home and travel into Ketu's period of detachment, endings and inner work, for 7 months, the 4th of nine sub-periods. Their natural relationship is neutral, so the tone rests mostly on where the two sit in your own chart. Being short, it is read as a passing note within the larger period.

Mars antardasha in Ketu mahadasha: 4 months 27 days

Mars brings its themes of drive, property, siblings and competition into Ketu's period of detachment, endings and inner work, for 4 months 27 days, the 5th of nine sub-periods. Their natural relationship is neutral, so the tone rests mostly on where the two sit in your own chart. Being short, it is read as a passing note within the larger period.

Rahu antardasha in Ketu mahadasha: 1 year 18 days

Rahu brings its themes of ambition, novelty and the foreign into Ketu's period of detachment, endings and inner work, for 1 year 18 days, the 6th of nine sub-periods. The two nodes always sit opposite each other in a chart, so this sub-period is read as a swing between the two ends of one axis. It is a mid-length sub-period, long enough to show its own colour.

Jupiter antardasha in Ketu mahadasha: 11 months 6 days

Jupiter brings its themes of growth, teaching, children and good counsel into Ketu's period of detachment, endings and inner work, for 11 months 6 days, the 7th of nine sub-periods. Their natural relationship is neutral, so the tone rests mostly on where the two sit in your own chart. It is a mid-length sub-period, long enough to show its own colour.

Saturn antardasha in Ketu mahadasha: 1 year 1 month 9 days

Saturn brings its themes of work, discipline, responsibility and slow results into Ketu's period of detachment, endings and inner work, for 1 year 1 month 9 days, the 8th of nine sub-periods. Ketu and Saturn are natural enemies, which the tradition reads as a stretch where their matters can pull against each other, so patience helps. It is a mid-length sub-period, long enough to show its own colour.

Mercury antardasha in Ketu mahadasha: 11 months 27 days

Mercury brings its themes of learning, trade, writing and negotiation into Ketu's period of detachment, endings and inner work, for 11 months 27 days, the 9th of nine sub-periods. Their natural relationship is neutral, so the tone rests mostly on where the two sit in your own chart. It is a mid-length sub-period, long enough to show its own colour.

When in the Ketu mahadasha do results show most?

The tradition times a planet's results within its period by the part of its sign it occupies at birth: a planet in the first third of its sign is read as giving its results early in the period, the middle third in the middle, and the last third toward the end. The order reverses for a retrograde planet and for the nodes. Sub-periods add a finer rhythm on top, and transits of slow planets such as Saturn and Jupiter add another. The kundli timeline shows which third applies to your own period.

How do I find my Ketu mahadasha dates?

Your dasha dates come from the Moon's exact position at birth. The nakshatra the Moon occupied sets which period you were born into, and how far the Moon had travelled through it sets how much of that period was already used. Everything after follows the fixed sequence. The Vimshottari dasha calculator lists your Ketu period and its sub-periods, and the form on this page shows when yours runs, if it falls in your lifetime.

How this is calculated

Nirayana rashis with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsha and whole-sign bhavas, computed to arc-second accuracy. Sunrise and sunset are the ones almanacs show, the Sun's upper edge with refraction, so the daily windows agree with the calendars you compare them with. More on our method.
