JAIMINI ARUDHA PADA आरूढ़ लग्न

Arudha Lagna & Upapada Lagna Calculator

Arudha Lagna is the image your ascendant casts: how you are perceived, as distinct from who you are. It is found by counting from a house to its lord and the same distance on again. Upapada Lagna is the arudha of the 12th, read in Jaimini for marriage. This calculator computes all twelve padas and shows every step of the counting.

Arudha Lagna guide

Arudha Lagna explained

Short answers to the questions people ask, with the reasoning behind each.

What is Arudha Lagna in Vedic astrology?

Arudha Lagna (आरूढ़ लग्न) is the image the ascendant casts (the self other people believe they are dealing with, as opposed to the self the lagna describes). The word arudha means mounted or reflected, and the distinction is the whole technique: a chart where the arudha sits far from the lagna is read as one where the person and their reputation are two different things. Every house casts an arudha in the same way, twelve in all, so there is an image of your resources, your home, your work and the rest. Arudha Lagna is A1, the image of the 1st. It is never a corrected ascendant, and a report that presents it as your "real" rising sign has discarded the only thing the technique had to say.

How do you calculate Arudha Lagna?

The rule is a double reflection. Take the house, find the lord of the sign it falls in, and count from the house to the sign that lord occupies; then count that same distance again onward from the lord's sign. Light leaves the house, strikes the lord, and travels the same span further. Counting is inclusive, so a lord in the 5th from its own house gives an arudha in the 9th. Then comes the exception that catches most implementations: if the result lands in the 1st or the 7th from the house it came from, it is discarded and the 10th sign from that result is taken instead. An image cannot fall on the object it reflects, or straight opposite it. That case arises whenever the lord sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th from the house, four placements in twelve, so it is not a corner case. The calculator above prints the count, the sign it reached, and whether the exception fired.

Is Arudha Lagna the same as my lagna or my rashi?

It is neither, and the three are routinely confused. Your lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth, fixed by the earth's rotation and changing about every two hours. Your rashi is the sign the Moon occupied (not the Sun, whatever a newspaper column has told you), and it changes about every two and a quarter days. The Arudha Lagna is derived from the lagna by the double reflection above; no new observation enters it, and it can never equal the lagna, because the exception discards exactly that result. All three are usually different signs, and each answers a different question: the lagna is the person, the rashi is the mind, the arudha is the reputation. Use the lagna calculator and the Moon sign calculator for the other two.

What is Upapada Lagna and what does it show?

Upapada Lagna (उपपद लग्न), often written UL, is the arudha of the 12th house. It is computed by exactly the same rule as every other pada; nothing about the arithmetic is special. What differs is what the tradition reads into it: Jaimini reads the Upapada for marriage and for the shape a partnership takes, on the reasoning that the 12th is the house of expense and of letting go, and a marriage is where one household is given up for another. Commentators further read the 2nd sign from the Upapada as what sustains the partnership, weighing its lord and whatever stands in it. All of that is a reading of a chart. It is not a statement about whether anyone will marry, when, or to whom, and nothing in it says anything about a real person's character. The classical texts read marriage from the whole chart, the 7th house and the running dasha alongside this.

What are the twelve arudha padas?

Every house casts one, so there are twelve, written A1 to A12. A1 is Arudha Lagna, the image of the self. A2, the Dhana Pada, is the image of your resources: what your means look like to other people, which need not be what they are. A3, Bhratri Pada, is the image of effort and siblings; A4, Matri Pada, of home and upbringing; A5, Mantra Pada, of learning and counsel; A6, Shatru Pada, of difficulties and adversaries; A7, Dara Pada, of partnerships and dealings; A8, Roga Pada, of what is hidden or shared; A9, Pitri Pada, of fortune and teachers; A10, Karma Pada, of work and public standing, which the tradition treats as a different thing from the career itself; A11, Labha Pada, of gains and networks; and A12 is Upapada Lagna. The calculator above reports all twelve with the counting shown for each.

Why do two calculators give different Arudha Lagnas?

Usually for one of two reasons, and this page names both rather than hiding them. The first is the 1st/7th exception, which a surprising number of implementations simply leave out. The second is lordship: the sutras do not settle who rules Aquarius and Scorpio when arudhas are computed, and the two available answers give different padas. Neither of these is a matter of our own preference, and neither is small enough to leave unstated. Between them they account for almost every disagreement you will find between two arudha reports built from the same birth details.

The 1st/7th exception, and what omitting it costs

A calculator that omits it reports an arudha equal to the house about a third of the time, which reads as a person whose image and self coincide: plausible, and false. The exception fires whenever the lord sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th from its own house, four placements in twelve, and the discarded result is replaced by the 10th sign from it. So if a report hands you an Arudha Lagna equal to your lagna, you have found the rule it skipped rather than an unusual chart.

The Rahu and Ketu co-lordship reading

Some Jaimini schools give Aquarius to Rahu and Scorpio to Ketu when arudhas are computed, where the traditional seven-graha set gives them to Saturn and Mars. That genuinely moves any pada whose house falls in one of those two signs, sometimes by triggering the exception the other lord would not have triggered. We lead with the traditional lordships and show the other reading beside it whenever your own chart is one of the affected ones, because the sutras do not settle the question.

What does Arudha Lagna in a particular house mean?

The reading is in the gap between the lagna and its arudha, not in the arudha alone, so it is counted as a house distance from the lagna. An arudha in the 4th or the 10th, both kendras, is read as image and self standing close together; one in the 6th, 8th or 12th is read as a public face at some distance from the person behind it. Two of the twelve positions can never occur: the Arudha Lagna is never in the 1st or the 7th from the lagna, because those are exactly the results the exception discards. If a site tells you your Arudha Lagna equals your lagna, it has skipped the rule. The report above names the house yours falls in and what the tradition reads into that distance.

Do I need my exact birth time for the arudha padas?

Yes, and more than for almost anything else on the site. Every pada is counted from a house, and the houses come from the lagna, which changes sign about every two hours, so a wrong ascendant does not nudge one pada, it rotates all twelve at once, and the report still looks perfectly confident. The grahas themselves are the safe part: only the Moon changes sign inside a single day, so essentially the whole risk sits in the ascendant. That makes an arudha lagna calculator by date of birth a contradiction in terms, and this form does not offer one. It is worth knowing where each tool in this group stands: a Moon sign usually survives a missing birth time, a nakshatra mostly does not, and the lagna and everything counted from it (the arudhas included) does not survive at all. If the time is lost, recover it from the hospital record or the birth certificate, or have the chart rectified.

Which conventions does this arudha calculator use?

The zodiac is sidereal (nirayana) with the Lahiri, or Chitrapaksha, ayanamsha, the standard adopted for the Indian national panchang, and lunar nodes default to the mean node. Bhavas are whole sign, which here is structural rather than a preference: an arudha is counted in whole signs from a house to the sign its lord occupies, so only the ascendant's sign enters the arithmetic and a quadrant system such as Placidus or Bhava Chalit has nothing to contribute to the count; it would change which bhava a graha sits in, not which sign a pada lands on. Counting is inclusive throughout, as the sutras state it. Lordships lead with the traditional seven grahas, with the node co-lordship reading shown beside any pada it moves. Jaimini is a separate system from the parashari material elsewhere on this site, and nothing here is mixed into a parashari reading.

How this is calculated

Nirayana rashis with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsha and whole-sign bhavas, computed to arc-second accuracy. Sunrise and sunset are the ones almanacs show, the Sun's upper edge with refraction, so the daily windows agree with the calendars you compare them with. More on our method.

Find my Arudha Lagna
What is the difference between Lagna and Arudha Lagna?

The lagna is the sign rising at your birth; the Arudha Lagna is the image that sign casts. The tradition reads the first as who you are and the second as how you are perceived. They are different signs in most charts, and the arudha is never a correction to the ascendant.

How is Upapada Lagna calculated?

By the ordinary arudha rule applied to the 12th house. Count from the 12th sign to the sign its lord occupies, count that same distance on again, and if the result falls in the 1st or 7th from the 12th, take the 10th sign from it instead.

Can the Arudha Lagna be the same sign as the Lagna?

No. The arudha rule discards any result falling in the 1st or the 7th from the house it came from and takes the 10th sign from there instead, so A1 can never equal the lagna. A calculator that returns one has left out the exception.

Does Upapada Lagna predict marriage?

No. It is the sign Jaimini reads for marriage and the shape a partnership takes, which is a reading of a chart rather than an account of anyone's life. Nothing in the technique has been shown to predict whether, when or whom a person marries.

Is Jaimini astrology the same as Parashari astrology?

No. Jaimini is a separate Sanskrit system attributed to the Upadesha Sutras. It shares the zodiac and the grahas but uses sign aspects, per-chart karakas and rashi dashas, so it is not a layer on top of the parashari reading and neither system corrects the other.

Do I need my exact birth time for Arudha Lagna?

Yes. Every arudha is counted from a house, and the houses depend on the ascendant, which changes sign about every two hours. An hour's error can move all twelve padas.

What is Arudha Lagna in simple terms?

Arudha Lagna is the image your ascendant casts: how the tradition says you are perceived, as distinct from who you are. It is found by counting from the 1st house to the sign its lord occupies, then counting that same distance on again. A chart where the arudha sits far from the lagna is read as one where person and reputation diverge.

How do I calculate Arudha Lagna by hand?

Find the sign on your ascendant and the planet that rules it. Count inclusively from the ascendant sign to the sign that ruler occupies, then count the same number of signs on again from the ruler. If the result is the 1st or the 7th from the ascendant, discard it and take the 10th sign from there instead.

What are the twelve arudha padas called?

A1 Arudha Lagna, A2 Dhana Pada, A3 Bhratri Pada, A4 Matri Pada, A5 Mantra Pada, A6 Shatru Pada, A7 Dara Pada, A8 Roga Pada, A9 Pitri Pada, A10 Karma Pada, A11 Labha Pada and A12 Upapada Lagna. Each is the image of the house it comes from, and the calculator reports all twelve with the counting shown.

Is Arudha Lagna the same as my rashi?

No. Your rashi is the sign the Moon occupied at birth, while the Arudha Lagna is derived from the rising sign by the double-reflection rule. They are usually different signs and answer different questions. The arudha is also never equal to the lagna itself, because the 1st/7th exception discards exactly that result.
