What does the 9th lord in the 10th house mean?
The ruler of the 9th, the strongest house of luck, carries fortune, dharma, the father, teachers and long journeys. Its placement shows where good fortune and guidance flow. The 10th house is the house of career, status and public action, the strongest of the four pillar houses (kendras), and the house the tradition reads first for work and reputation. With the 9th lord in the 10th, the two are joined: the matters of the 9th house (luck, father, teachers and beliefs) are carried into the 10th (career and reputation).
How is the 9th lord in the 10th read for career?
For career, one of the finest placements in the tradition: fortune and dharma rise into public standing, with careers in teaching, law, religion, government or leadership, and notable standing for a person with a strong 9th lord. The classical texts count it among the favourable placements of the 9th lord, reading the matters of the 9th house (luck, father, teachers and beliefs) as finding a public outlet in career. A strong ruler is read as getting the best of the placement; a weak, combust or debilitated one as giving less of it.
How does the ascendant change the 9th lord in the 10th?
Which planet is the 9th lord depends on the ascendant, and so does the sign it occupies when it sits in the 10th house. Houses are counted whole-sign from the ascendant (a cusp-based system such as Placidus or Bhava Chalit can move a planet near a sign edge into the next house). The placement is strongest by dignity for Taurus ascendant (Saturn in Aquarius). It is weakest for Aries ascendant (Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn), unless the debilitation is cancelled. The Role column is the planet's overall role for that ascendant in the Parashari scheme.
| Ascendant | 9th lord | Sits in | Dignity | Role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Jupiter | Capricorn | debilitated (weakest) | helpful |
| Taurus | Saturn | Aquarius | own sign (strong) | most helpful |
| Gemini | Saturn | Pisces | neutral sign | neutral |
| Cancer | Jupiter | Aries | friendly sign | helpful |
| Leo | Mars | Taurus | neutral sign | most helpful |
| Virgo | Venus | Gemini | friendly sign | helpful |
| Libra | Mercury | Cancer | enemy sign | helpful |
| Scorpio | Moon | Leo | friendly sign | most helpful |
| Sagittarius | Sun | Virgo | neutral sign | helpful |
| Capricorn | Mercury | Libra | friendly sign | helpful |
| Aquarius | Venus | Scorpio | neutral sign | most helpful |
| Pisces | Mars | Sagittarius | friendly sign | most helpful |
What makes the 9th lord in the 10th stronger or weaker?
The placement is the same label in every chart, but the tradition reads its results through the strength of the planet ruling your 9th house. Dignity comes first: a planet in its own or exaltation sign gives its results more fully, and one in its sign of weakness gives them weakly. Company and aspects come next: Jupiter's aspect is read as protective, and a harsh planet joining it as adding friction. Closeness to the Sun weakens a planet. And the 10th house itself is read as a whole, with every planet in it and its own ruler's placement weighed together.
How does the D10 confirm the 9th lord in the 10th?
Parashari practice checks a birth-chart placement in the divisional chart for its subject: for the 10th house that is the D10 (dashamsa), used for career and public standing. If the planet ruling your 9th house is in its own or exaltation sign there, the tradition reads the placement as confirmed; if it is in its sign of weakness, as held back. A divisional chart changes sign every 3 degrees of zodiac, so it is sensitive to the birth time, and a time known to the minute makes this check reliable. The kundli reading runs it for your chart.
When does the 9th lord in the 10th come forward?
The tradition reads a placement as lifelong but most active during the periods of the planet involved. In the Vimshottari dasha system, the main period (mahadasha) and sub-periods (antardasha) of the planet ruling your 9th house are when the themes of this placement are read as most visible, together with periods of planets that aspect it or sit with it. The dasha calculator lists those periods for your birth, and the kundli timeline reads the running one for you.
Which other factors are read with the 9th lord in the 10th?
The tradition never reads a house from one placement alone. The 10th house also has its natural significators, the Sun, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn, the natural significators of status, skill, counsel and labour, and a house is read as sound when both its ruler and its significators are strong. Jupiter's aspect on the 10th is read as protective whichever planet sits there. The other pages in this series cover each planet and each house ruler in the 10th, and the kundli reading weighs them all together for your chart.
How does KP read the 9th lord in the 10th?
Krishnamurti Paddhati (KP) divides the houses unequally from the moment of birth and judges the 10th house by the sub-lord of its starting point. For career, KP counts links to the 2nd, 6th, 10th, 11th houses as supporting and to the 5th, 9th, 12th as working against it. The 9th lord matters in KP through those links: if it is a significator of the 10th house, its periods are read as bringing the house's matters forward. The KP reading on the kundli page shows this for your chart.
How this is calculated
Nirayana rashis with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsha and whole-sign bhavas, computed to arc-second accuracy. Sunrise and sunset are the ones almanacs show, the Sun's upper edge with refraction, so the daily windows agree with the calendars you compare them with. More on our method.
