How it works

How to calculate house number numerology

The number on your door and, if you like, a date of birth.

  1. Type the number on the door

As written: 402, 12A or B-402. A wing letter before the digits is left out.

  2. Add the building number and your date of birth

Both optional. The building gives a combined reading; the date gives your mulank.

  3. Read the digit and the comparison

The ruling graha, the traditional reading, and friendly, neutral or contrary.

Where this method actually comes from

House number numerology is a modern application. Classical Jyotish reads a home through vastu and through the muhurat for entering it, not through the number on the door, and no classical text assigns a number to a house or a flat. What is old is the material it borrows: the Indian mapping of the numbers 1 to 9 to the nine grahas, and the Chaldean letter values, which are Western and named for Babylon.

  • Chaldean letter values are a Western esoteric system named for Babylon. They are not Indian and not Vedic.
  • The number-to-graha mapping is Indian, from ank jyotish: one to nine, Surya to Mangal.
  • The Lo Shu grid is Chinese in origin, from the Luo Shu magic square, and is used on our Lo Shu grid calculator rather than here.
  • Applying any of them to a house or flat number is a modern application with no classical source of its own.
The rules this calculator follows

Use the number of your own door: the flat number in a building, the house or plot number otherwise. A letter such as the A in 12A is left out by some practitioners and counted by others at its Chaldean value, so both totals are shown. A tower or wing letter (the B in B-402) names the building rather than the home and is usually left out; enter the building number separately if you want it read.

Some practitioners also read the flat number together with the building or plot number, adding the two. The combined total is shown as a second reading when you give a building number; the flat number alone remains the main one.

A zero adds nothing to a digit sum. It is counted and shown rather than dropped, so 402 totals 6 exactly as 42 does.

When a letter is counted, it is valued by the Chaldean table, which gives 1 to 8 by sound rather than by alphabetical order, so no letter carries 9. Only a short letter group after the digits (the A in 12A) is counted; words such as Flat or Tower are labels and are left out.

Numbers are reduced by adding their digits until one digit between 1 and 9 remains. We reduce all the way down: 38 becomes 11, and 11 becomes 2. Some numerologists stop at the master numbers 11, 22 and 33 and read them as they are. We show those steps in the working so you can see where a master number appeared if you follow that school.

Whether two numbers are read as friendly, neutral or contrary is decided by the grahas that rule them, using the natural friendship table of Jyotish, the same table Graha Maitri is scored from in kundali matching. That table is direction-sensitive, so both directions are read and combined. It covers the seven classical grahas only; Rahu and Ketu, which rule 4 and 7, are placed by the modern convention rather than by a classical rule, and we flag that rather than hide it.

Nothing on this page is a prediction. It reports what the tradition reads into a number; what to do with that is your judgement, not an arithmetic result.

House numbers 1 to 9 in numerology

What the tradition reads into a home whose number reduces to each digit. A reading, not a forecast: nothing links a door number to what happens inside.

House number 1: Sun सूर्य

The initiator. A house number reducing to 1 is read as Surya's: a home of independence and self-direction, associated with someone living alone, starting out, or running their own affairs from the house.

Caution. A 1 home centres on one person, which practitioners read as less suited to a large shared household.

House number 2: Moon चंद्र

The harmoniser. A house number reducing to 2 is read as Chandra's: a home of care, closeness and partnership, associated with couples and with a quiet, domestic life.

Caution. Traditionally read as sensitive to mood; the Moon's number is said to reflect whatever the household brings into it.

House number 3: Jupiter गुरु

The teacher. A house number reducing to 3 is read as Guru's: a home of learning, hospitality and gatherings, associated with teachers, students and a house where people visit often.

Caution. Excess: too many commitments and a house that is rarely quiet.

House number 4: Rahu राहु

The unconventional builder. A house number reducing to 4 is read as Rahu's: structure and hard work, but also the unconventional, associated with a home that is being built up or rearranged.

Caution. Popular numerology treats 4 with caution for a home, reading it as restless and prone to sudden change. Practitioners who hold this reading often point to vastu remedies rather than to moving; neither has evidence behind it.

House number 5: Mercury बुध

The communicator. A house number reducing to 5 is read as Budh's: movement, talk and trade, associated with a busy household, a home office, and people coming and going.

Caution. Traditionally read as unsettled: a 5 home is said to be lived in rather than rested in.

House number 6: Venus शुक्र

The nurturer. A house number reducing to 6 is read as Shukra's: comfort, beauty and family, the number popular numerology most often describes as homely, associated with a well-kept house.

Caution. Spending on the home's appearance ahead of its needs.

House number 7: Ketu केतु

The seeker. A house number reducing to 7 is read as Ketu's: quiet, study and reflection, associated with a retreat, a scholar's house, or a home kept private.

Caution. Read as withdrawn; practitioners describe a 7 home as better suited to solitude than to a lively household.

House number 8: Saturn शनि

The builder under load. A house number reducing to 8 is read as Shani's: discipline, long effort and permanence, associated with property held a long time and a home built up slowly.

Caution. Popular numerology treats 8 with the most caution, and the traditional reading is delay and responsibility, not misfortune. There is no evidence that a door number changes anything that happens inside.

House number 9: Mars मंगल

The completer. A house number reducing to 9 is read as Mangal's: energy, courage and activity, associated with an active, outspoken household and with physical work.

Caution. Read as heated: friction in a house where everyone has a strong view.

Guide

House Number Numerology Calculator, explained

How the number is worked out, what the tradition reads into it, and where each part of the method comes from.

What is house number numerology?

House number numerology reduces the number of a house, flat or plot to a single digit from 1 to 9 and reads that digit through the graha ank jyotish gives it (1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn, 9 Mars). The number-to-graha mapping is Indian. The letter values used for a number like 12A are Chaldean, a Western system named for Babylon. Reading a home by its door number is a modern application: classical Jyotish reads a dwelling through vastu and the griha pravesh muhurat, never through a number.

How to calculate house number numerology?

Add the digits of the number on your door and keep adding until one digit is left. Flat 402 is 4 + 0 + 2, which is 6, ruled by Venus. House 1947 is 1 + 9 + 4 + 7, which is 21, and 21 reduces to 2 + 1, which is 3. A letter that is part of the number, the A in 12A, is left out by some practitioners and counted by others at its Chaldean value (A is 1, so 12A becomes 4). A wing letter such as the B in B-402 names the tower, not the home, and is left out. This house number numerology calculator prints each version with every step.

What is the best house number in numerology?

No number is best in the sense of changing what happens in a home, and there is no evidence that a door number does. Popular numerology most often describes 6, Venus's number, as the homely one, and 1, 3 and 5 as good house numbers for independence, gatherings and a busy household. The personal reading, which practitioners weight more, prefers a house number whose graha is friendly to the resident's mulank. The calculator reports both, as the tradition's preferences, and leaves the choice of a home to you.

What do house numbers 4 and 8 mean in numerology?

They are the two numbers popular numerology treats with the most caution. A 4 house number is Rahu's and is read as structure mixed with restlessness and sudden change; an 8 house number is Saturn's and is read as discipline, responsibility and slow, lasting effort. Neither reading is misfortune, and the same tradition associates 8 with property held for a long time. Practitioners who dislike these numbers usually suggest vastu remedies rather than moving. None of it has evidence behind it, and many families live contentedly at both.

Should a flat number include the building or tower number?

The usual reading takes the flat number alone, because it is the door that belongs to you; the building number is shared with every other flat. Some practitioners also add the two together and read the combined total as a second number describing the address. Enter the building number in its own field and the calculator shows that combined reading beside the main one. A tower or wing letter typed before the flat number, as in B-402 or C 1203, is recognised and left out of the sum rather than silently added.

Does house number numerology come from vastu or Vedic astrology?

From neither. Vastu shastra reads a home by its directions, entrance and layout, and Jyotish marks the move itself with a griha pravesh muhurat, a favourable day to enter a new home. Neither assigns a number to the house. House number numerology borrows the Indian nine-graha mapping of ank jyotish and, for letters, the Chaldean values, and applies them to a street or flat number. It is a modern application, and it is labelled as one on this page.

FAQ

House number numerology FAQs

Short answers about the method, the arithmetic and what the result does and does not say.

The quickest answer is the calculation itself. It takes a few seconds.

Calculate the house number
What does house number 1 mean in numerology?

House number 1 is ruled by the Sun and is read in numerology as a home of independence and self-direction, associated with someone living alone, starting out, or working from the house. The traditional caution is that a 1 home centres on one person. Any house number that reduces to 1, such as 10, 19, 28 or 802, carries the same reading.

Is 5 a good house number in numerology?

Popular numerology reads a 5 house number as Mercury's: movement, conversation, trade and a busy household with people coming and going, which suits a home office. Its traditional caution is restlessness. Whether 5 is good for you, in the tradition's terms, depends on whether Mercury is friendly to the graha of your own mulank.

What does house number 11 mean in numerology?

Eleven reduces to 1 + 1, which is 2, the Moon's number, read as a home of care and partnership. Some Western schools stop at 11 and treat it as a master number, read as intuitive and idealistic. The calculator reduces all the way to a single digit and flags 11, 22 and 33 in the steps, so either reading can be followed.

How do I read a house number with a letter, like 12A?

Practitioners do it two ways, and the calculator shows both. The first leaves the letter out, so 12A reads as 1 + 2, which is 3. The second counts the letter at its Chaldean value, where A is 1, so 12A reads as 1 + 2 + 1, which is 4. A letter before the digits, as in B-402, is read as the wing and left out.

What is a lucky house number in numerology?

Lucky house number numerology usually means a number whose graha is friendly to the resident's mulank in the Jyotish friendship table, with 6 the number most often described as homely. Enter your date of birth and the calculator shows how your house number relates to your mulank and bhagyank. There is no evidence that a door number affects anything that happens inside.

Does house number numerology apply to a rented flat?

Practitioners read the home you live in, rented or owned, since the method is about the address rather than the title deed. The number is the flat or house number on your door. If you are choosing between several rentals, you can run each number with your date of birth and compare the readings side by side.

Should I check a muhurat before moving into a new house?

A griha pravesh muhurat is the classical practice for a new home; the house number is the modern one. Jyotish chooses a favourable day, nakshatra and time window to enter the house for the first time, and our griha pravesh muhurat page lists those dates. Many families use the muhurat and never look at the house number at all.
