What Raksha Bandhan is

Raksha Bandhan is the Purnima of Shravana, the full moon of the monsoon, when a sister ties a rakhi, a thread of protection, on her brother's wrist. Raksha is protection and bandhan the tie. The same full moon is Shravani, when Brahmins change the sacred thread, and Narali Purnima on the western coast, when coconuts are offered to the sea.

The story told of it

Several accounts lie behind the thread. In one, Indrani tied a thread charged with mantras on Indra's wrist before his battle with the asuras. In another, Lakshmi tied one on King Bali and asked for her husband Vishnu's return from his palace. The Mahabharata tradition tells that Draupadi tore her sari to bind Krishna's cut finger, and he remembered the gesture when she needed him.

How it is kept

The sister prepares a plate with the rakhi, roli, rice, a lamp and sweets. She applies a tilak to her brother's forehead, ties the rakhi on his right wrist, waves the aarti and feeds him a sweet; he gives her a gift in return. The tradition sets the tying in Aparahna, the afternoon, when Purnima is current and Bhadra is over, or in Pradosh when the afternoon is not free of Bhadra.

How the day is chosen

Raksha Bandhan is kept on Shravana Purnima, away from Bhadra. When Bhadra is over before sunrise the rakhi may be tied from sunrise for as long as Purnima lasts; otherwise in Aparahna, the afternoon, after Bhadra ends, or in Pradosh if the afternoon is not free of it.
