What Govardhan Puja is

Govardhan Puja is the first day of the bright half of Kartika, the day after Lakshmi Puja and the fourth of Diwali's five days. It is kept above all in Braj, around Mathura and Vrindavan, as Annakut, the mountain of food. In Maharashtra the same day is Bali Pratipada or Padwa, and in Gujarat it begins the new year.

The story told of it

The Bhagavata Purana tells that the people of Braj made a yearly offering to Indra for rain until the young Krishna asked them to worship Govardhan hill instead, which fed their cattle and gave them water. Indra sent seven days of storm in anger, and Krishna lifted the hill on the little finger of his left hand and held it as an umbrella over the village and its cows until Indra relented. The day remembers that shelter.

How it is kept

A small Govardhan is shaped in the courtyard from cow dung, decorated with flowers and grass, and worshipped and walked around. In temples and homes an annakut is laid out, a mountain of dishes, often fifty-six, offered to Krishna and then shared as prasad. Cows and bullocks are bathed, garlanded and fed, and in Braj pilgrims walk the parikrama of Govardhan hill.

How the day is chosen

Govardhan Puja is kept on the first morning Shukla Pratipada of Kartika is current in Pratahkala, the first fifth of the daylight. The evening muhurat is Sayahna, the last fifth, when Pratipada still lasts.
