What Bhai Dooj is

Bhai Dooj is the second day of the bright half of Kartika and the last of Diwali's five days, kept by sisters and brothers. It is Yama Dwitiya in the Puranas, Bhau Beej in Maharashtra, Bhai Tika in Nepal and Bhai Phonta in Bengal. Sisters welcome their brothers with tilak and aarti, and brothers bring gifts.

The story told of it

The tradition's account is that Yamuna had long asked her brother Yama to visit her, and on this Dwitiya he came. She welcomed him with a lamp, a tilak on his forehead and a meal she had cooked, and he was so pleased that he granted her a wish: that every brother who visits his sister on this day and eats at her home be honoured as he was. The day is named for that visit.

How it is kept

Brothers go to their sisters' homes. The sister prepares a plate with roli, rice, a lamp and sweets, applies a tilak to her brother's forehead, waves the aarti and feeds him a meal she has cooked; in Bengal the tilak is of sandalwood. Brothers give gifts in return. Many families bathe in the Yamuna, at Mathura above all, on the morning of the day.

How the day is chosen

Bhai Dooj is kept on the day Dwitiya covers more of Aparahna, the fourth fifth of the daylight, because the tilak is given in the afternoon, as Yamuna is said to have welcomed Yama.
