What Satyanarayan Puja is

Satyanarayan Puja is the worship of Vishnu as Satyanarayana, the lord of truth, done on the Purnima of every month and on days of thanksgiving such as a housewarming, a wedding or a new start. The Skanda Purana's Satyanarayana Katha, read at every puja, tells of the merchant, the woodcutter and the king who kept it and those who forgot their promise.

How the day and time are worked out

Each Satyanarayan Puja day is the day Purnima is current at the middle of Madhyahna, the middle fifth of the daylight. When Purnima begins in the morning and ends before the next midday, that can be the day before the Purnima of the panchang.

How it is kept

The puja is done in the evening, often with the family and neighbours gathered. A platform is set with a picture of Satyanarayana, a kalash and banana leaves; Vishnu is worshipped with tulsi, flowers, fruit and panchamrit, and the five chapters of the katha are read. The prasad, sheera of semolina, ghee, sugar and banana, is shared by everyone present.
