What Masik Shivaratri is

Masik Shivaratri, the monthly night of Shiva, is the Chaturdashi of the dark half of every lunar month, the night before the new moon. It comes twelve or thirteen times a year; the one in Phalguna (Magha in the south's reckoning) is Maha Shivaratri, the greatest of them. Devotees who keep Maha Shivaratri often take up the monthly vrat from it and keep it through the year.

How the day and time are worked out

Each Masik Shivaratri is the night Krishna Chaturdashi is current at Nishita, the eighth of the fifteen muhurtas of the night, around midnight, because the worship belongs there. When Chaturdashi begins late in the day, the date is still the evening before the night it covers; the Nishita kaal given is that night's.

How it is kept

The day is a fast, many keeping only fruit and milk, and the worship belongs to the night. At Nishita, the muhurta around midnight, the Shiva linga is bathed with water, milk, curd, honey and ghee and offered bilva leaves, white flowers and dhatura, with the mantra Om Namah Shivaya. Many keep a vigil, and the fast is broken the next morning after sunrise.
