What Chandra Darshan is

Chandra Darshan is the first evening after the new moon on which the thin crescent can be seen after sunset, usually the day after Amavasya. The tradition holds the first sight of the new moon auspicious, and many keep a fast through the day and break it after seeing the moon and offering arghya to it.

How the day and time are worked out

Each Chandra Darshan is the first evening after the new moon on which the crescent can be seen with the naked eye. That is judged by the astronomical test of crescent visibility (Yallop's): how high the Moon stands above the Sun against how thin the crescent is, at the best moment between sunset and moonset. The window runs from sunset to moonset.

How it is kept

Devotees fast from sunrise and, after sunset, look for the crescent low in the west, which sets soon after the Sun. When it is seen, water mixed with milk, rice and sugar is offered to the Moon as arghya, with a prayer to Chandra, and the fast is broken. The window is short, from sunset to moonset, so this page gives it for your city.

When can the new moon be seen on Chandra Darshan?

Between sunset and moonset, low in the western sky. The crescent is very thin and sets soon after the Sun, so the window is often under an hour; this page gives it for the city you choose.

Is Chandra Darshan always the day after Amavasya?

Usually, but not always. When the new moon falls late in the day, the crescent is too young to be seen that evening, and the first sight moves to the next evening.
