What Masik Durgashtami is

Masik Durgashtami is the Ashtami of the bright half of every lunar month, kept for the goddess Durga. It comes twelve or thirteen times a year; the Durgashtami of Ashwin, in Sharad Navratri, is Maha Ashtami, the greatest of them. Those who keep it fast through the day and worship Durga in the morning.

How the day and time are worked out

Each Masik Durgashtami is the day Shukla Ashtami is current at sunrise. When an Ashtami begins after one sunrise and ends before the next, so that no sunrise falls in it, it is kept on the day it begins.

How it is kept

Devotees bathe early, fast through the day or keep to fruit and milk, and worship Durga with red flowers, kumkum, a red chunari and a lamp of ghee. The Durga Saptashati or the Durga Chalisa is read, and many offer a meal to young girls as forms of the goddess, as in Navratri. The fast is broken in the evening or the next morning.
