Skanda Sashti is the Shashthi of the bright half of every lunar month, kept for Murugan, also called Skanda or Kartikeya, the son of Shiva and Parvati and commander of the gods' army. It is kept above all in Tamil Nadu and wherever Tamils live. The Shashthi of Kartika (Aippasi) closes a six-day festival with Soorasamharam, Murugan's victory over the asura Surapadman.
Each Skanda Sashti is the day Shashthi begins between sunrise and sunset, when Panchami and Shashthi meet in the same day, which the tradition prefers; when Shashthi begins at night, it is the day Shashthi is current at sunrise.
Devotees fast from sunrise, many taking only water or a single meal, and visit Murugan temples, above all the six abodes of Murugan in Tamil Nadu. The Kanda Sashti Kavacham is recited, and offerings of flowers, fruit and milk are made to the vel, Murugan's spear. The fast is broken in the evening after the puja or the next morning.
