01What Pradosh Vrat is

Pradosh Vrat is kept on Trayodashi, the thirteenth tithi, in both the bright and the dark half of the month, so it comes twice a lunar month, some twenty-four or twenty-five times a year. It is the vrat of Shiva. Pradosh means the opening of the night, and the observance is tied to that hour rather than to the whole day: the tradition tells that Shiva dances in joy on Kailash at dusk on Trayodashi, with the gods gathered to watch, and that worship offered then is especially dear to him. Each Pradosh takes a name from the weekday it falls on.

02How the day and time are worked out

The page lists each Pradosh on the day whose sunset falls inside Trayodashi, because the puja belongs to the evening, not to sunrise. Its window is Pradosh kaal: it opens at sunset and runs for the first fifth of the night, the stretch from that sunset to the next sunrise, which in India comes to about two hours in June and nearer three in December. If Trayodashi begins only after sunset, the window opens when it begins; if Trayodashi ends before the fifth is over, the window closes with it. The weekday of that evening gives the Pradosh its name.

03How it is kept

The tradition keeps Pradosh with a fast through the day and Shiva worship at dusk. Families bathe again before sunset, and in the Pradosh window offer water, milk and bel leaves to the Shiva linga, with the Panchakshari mantra, Om Namah Shivaya, and a lamp of ghee. Nandi is worshipped alongside, since the tradition places him before Shiva at that hour. The fast is broken after the puja. The weekday names carry their own emphasis: Som Pradosh, on a Monday, is the most widely kept; Bhaum Pradosh falls on a Tuesday; and Shani Pradosh, on a Saturday, is kept for Shani as well as Shiva.
