# Shani Dhaiya Calculator

Shani Dhaiya, also called Kantak Shani or Small Panoti, is Saturn's two-and-a-half year transit through the 4th or the 8th sign from your natal Moon. It is a separate and much shorter event from Sade Sati, and the two can never run at once. This calculator dates every Dhaiya of your life.

## What is Shani Dhaiya?

Dhaiya means two and a half, the years Saturn takes to cross a single rashi. Shani Dhaiya is that one-sign transit when it falls in the 4th or the 8th sign from your natal Moon, and those two houses are the whole of the definition. It is also called Kantak Shani (kantak is a thorn) and Small Panoti, set against Sade Sati's Bada Panoti. Two houses means two readings: the 4th is sukha bhava, so the classical reading covers home, property, vehicles, the mother and domestic peace; the 8th is read for sudden change, for transformation, and for matters that surface from underneath. Like Sade Sati it is measured from the Moon sign, never the Sun sign and never the ascendant, so a wrong birth date or a wrong birthplace puts the whole calculation in the wrong rashi. And like Sade Sati it is a position rather than a forecast: the tradition describes what the transit means, which is a different thing from what will happen.

## What is the difference between Sade Sati and Shani Dhaiya?

Both are Saturn transits measured from the natal Moon, and that is where the resemblance ends. Sade Sati is Saturn crossing three consecutive signs (the 12th from the Moon, the Moon's own sign, and the 2nd), which takes about seven and a half years and runs in three named phases. Dhaiya is Saturn crossing a single sign, the 4th or the 8th, which takes about two and a half years and has no phases at all. They cannot overlap: the houses involved are 12, 1 and 2 for one and 4 and 8 for the other, and Saturn occupies only one sign at a time. So at any moment a chart is under Sade Sati, under Dhaiya, or under neither; there is no third possibility and no doubling up. Dhaiya is generally considered the milder of the two, both because it is shorter and because it never puts Saturn on the Moon itself. Our Sade Sati calculator checks the other one from the same birth details.

## Which rashis are in Shani Dhaiya now, and when does it end?

Saturn entered Meen (Pisces) on 29 March 2025 and holds it, retrograde re-entry included, until 23 February 2028. Meen is the 4th sign from Dhanu and the 8th from Simha, so two Moon signs are under Dhaiya right now: Dhanu (Sagittarius) in the 4th-house Dhaiya and Simha (Leo) in the 8th-house Dhaiya, both running 29 Mar 2025 to 23 Feb 2028, with a genuine break from 3 June to 20 October 2027 while Saturn is over in Mesh. Kark and Vrischika finished theirs on 29 March 2025. Saturn's next sign passages, and the two rashis each one puts into Dhaiya, in IST: Mesh, 3 Jun 2027 to 17 Apr 2030: Makar (4th) and Kanya (8th); Vrish, 8 Aug 2029 to 31 May 2032: Kumbha and Tula; Mithun, 31 May 2032 to 13 Jul 2034: Meen and Vrischika; Kark, 13 Jul 2034 to 27 Aug 2036: Mesh and Dhanu; Simha, 27 Aug 2036 to 13 Jul 2039: Vrish and Makar; Kanya, 22 Oct 2038 to 26 Sep 2041: Mithun and Kumbha; Tula, 28 Jan 2041 to 30 Aug 2044: Kark and Meen. Run the calculator above for these dates in your own birthplace's timezone.

## What are the effects of Shani Dhaiya, according to the tradition?

The tradition reads the two Dhaiyas differently, because the two houses are different, and a report that gives one set of effects for both has thrown away half of what it knows. Kantak Shani, the thorn, is the traditional image for both: an irritation that slows things down rather than an event. That framing is the tradition's own and it is worth keeping. Nothing about a transit has been shown to determine an outcome, and this page will not tell you what is going to happen to your home, your family or your body. What the transit does give is timing you can plan around, and the tradition's advice for Saturn periods is consistently unglamorous: do the work properly, keep commitments, and do not rush decisions that can wait.

### Saturn in the 4th from the Moon: home, property and the mother

The 4th is sukha bhava, the house of settled comfort, so the classical reading of this Dhaiya is domestic: the house itself, land and property, vehicles, the mother's wellbeing, and a restlessness at home that the texts describe as difficulty settling rather than as any single upheaval. The traditional advice is correspondingly domestic: attend to what has been deferred about the home, and treat repairs and paperwork as the work of the period rather than an interruption to it.

### Saturn in the 8th from the Moon: change and what surfaces

The 8th is read for the unseen, for inheritance and shared resources, and for turns that arrive without notice, so this Dhaiya is described as a period of change rather than of discomfort at home. The classical reading favours caution over speed: matters buried for years tend to come up for settlement, and the tradition treats that surfacing as the useful part of the transit. Neither of the two houses is ranked above the other.

## What happens when Shani Dhaiya ends?

Saturn leaves the sign and the Dhaiya is simply over. There is no tail-off period and no phase structure, because a Dhaiya is a single-sign transit rather than a three-sign passage like Sade Sati. The date to watch is Saturn's next sign ingress, and it needs care: Saturn often enters a sign, turns retrograde, falls back and re-enters months later, so the real end of the current Dhaiya for Dhanu and Simha is 23 February 2028 rather than 3 June 2027, when Saturn first leaves Meen. The tradition's reading of the aftermath is measured rather than triumphant: what was built under Saturn's discipline is what remains, and Saturn's results are classically described as slow, earned and durable. It is worth checking what Saturn does next from your Moon, too. Leaving the 4th, it moves to the 5th; leaving the 8th, it moves to the 9th. Neither is a Sade Sati house nor a Dhaiya house, so most rashis coming out of a Dhaiya are entering an unremarkable stretch of Saturn transit.

## Is the 4th-house Dhaiya different from the 8th-house one?

Yes, and it is the main thing a Dhaiya report ought to tell you. The 4th and the 8th are counted from the same natal Moon but govern quite different territory, so the same two-and-a-half year transit reads differently depending on which one you are in. The 4th is the house of home, mother, land and inner peace, a domestic reading. The 8th is the house of the unseen, of inheritance and of abrupt turns, a reading about change rather than comfort. Traditional opinion differs on which is heavier, and the honest position is that neither is universally worse: it depends on Saturn's dignity, on what Saturn rules from your lagna, and on the dasha running underneath. Our report names which of the two you are in for every Dhaiya of your life instead of returning a bare yes or no, because the house is the reading.

## Why do Shani Dhaiya dates differ between calculators?

For the same four reasons Sade Sati dates differ, plus a fifth that is a genuine error rather than a convention. The four conventions are the handling of retrograde spans, the shared boundary day, the ayanamsha and the timezone: we keep retrograde spans separate, give the boundary day to the period beginning, use Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), and convert every date to the birthplace's own zone. The fifth is not a convention two schools disagree about. A calculator that counts the 4th and the 8th from the Sun sign instead of the Moon sign is answering a different question, and it will disagree with every honest report by whole rashis rather than by a day.

### Retrograde re-entry, and Saturn's 2027 loop

Saturn leaves a sign, turns retrograde, falls back into it and only finally clears it months later. The current Dhaiya is a clean example: Saturn first leaves Meen on 3 June 2027, returns to it on 20 October 2027, and does not clear it for good until 23 February 2028. A report printing the first exit ends the period eight months early; one merging the whole stretch hides a real four-month break. We print the spans separately.

### The boundary day belongs to two periods at once

A Dhaiya is bounded by two sign ingresses and nothing else, so both of its dates sit on a boundary day: the day Saturn changes sign, which is partly inside the period ending and partly inside the one beginning. A site that assigns that whole day to the period ending reads a day earlier than ours at both ends. The convention is stated rather than hidden, and it explains most one-day disagreements.

### The ayanamsha decides where the sign boundary falls

Every Dhaiya date is a moment Saturn crosses from one sidereal sign into the next, and where that boundary lies depends entirely on the ayanamsha in use. We use Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), the Indian standard. A site on a different published value places the same ingress days or weeks away, and because a Dhaiya has only two dates in it, a shifted ayanamsha moves both of them rather than only one.

### The timezone the dates are printed in

An ingress falling late in the universal-time day reads as one date in Europe and the next in India, so a report that never converts is a day out for many readers. We convert to the timezone the birthplace was on at the time, which is also the zone the rest of the report uses. A site publishing everything in IST regardless of birthplace will differ from us on exactly those late-in-the-day ingresses.

### Counting from the Sun sign, the one that is simply wrong

Dhaiya is defined from the natal Moon sign, so a calculator taking the 4th and the 8th from the Sun sign is measuring from the wrong point entirely. This is not a convention two schools disagree about; it is a different calculation, and it will name the wrong rashis as being in Dhaiya for most charts. A site that asks for a date of birth and no birthplace cannot be doing the Moon-sign version.

## How does this calculator find your Dhaiya dates?

In three steps, none of them guessed: resolve the birth moment, take the Moon's rashi from it, then scan Saturn across a lifetime and count each span from that rashi. Land in the 4th or the 8th and the span is a Dhaiya; land in the 12th, 1st or 2nd and it is Sade Sati. The spans are printed separately rather than merged, so a retrograde re-entry shows as the real break it is, and the dates come back in your birthplace's own timezone rather than in universal time. Nothing is stored: the birth details are used for the calculation and discarded when the page renders.

### Step one: resolving the birth moment

The date and clock time you give are converted to universal time using the timezone the birthplace was actually on that date, which is not always the timezone it is on today. India's own offset has changed, and many countries have moved in and out of summer time, so a conversion that assumes the modern offset can be an hour out. An hour rarely moves the Moon's rashi, but for a birth near a sign change it does.

### Step two: the Moon's sidereal rashi

The Moon's longitude at that instant is computed and the ayanamsha subtracted to give a sidereal position, and the rashi it falls in is the single number every Dhaiya is measured from. Under Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) the Moon crosses a rashi about every two and a quarter days. Get this one number wrong and every date in the report is wrong with it, which is why the birth date and the birthplace matter most here.

### Step three: bisecting Saturn's sign ingresses

Saturn's sidereal longitude is sampled across the whole of a normal lifetime, every point where it changes sign is noted, and each of those crossings is then bisected until the ingress is fixed to well under a day. Bisection is used rather than a lookup table because retrograde motion makes Saturn cross the same boundary three times in some years, and a table holding one crossing per boundary loses the other two.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is Shani Dhaiya?

Shani Dhaiya is Saturn's two-and-a-half year transit through the 4th or the 8th sign from your natal Moon. Dhaiya means two and a half, the years Saturn takes to cross one rashi. It is also called Kantak Shani or Small Panoti, and it is measured from the Moon sign rather than the Sun sign.

### How long does Shani Dhaiya last?

About two and a half years, the time Saturn takes to cross a single sign. Retrograde motion can stretch that: Saturn may enter the sign, turn back into the previous one, and re-enter months later, so a Dhaiya can span nearly three calendar years with a real break inside it.

### Which rashis are in Shani Dhaiya now?

Dhanu and Simha, because Saturn is transiting Meen from 29 March 2025 until 23 February 2028. Meen is the 4th sign from Dhanu and the 8th from Simha. Two of the twelve rashis are in Dhaiya at any moment, in the same way that three are always in Sade Sati.

### What are the effects of Shani Dhaiya?

The tradition reads the 4th-house Dhaiya for home, property, vehicles and the mother, and the 8th-house one for sudden change and for matters that surface unexpectedly. Kantak Shani, the thorn, is the classical image: an irritation that slows things. That is what the tradition holds: a description of a technique, not a forecast of events.

### What happens when Shani Dhaiya ends?

Saturn leaves the sign and the Dhaiya is over, with no phase structure and no tail-off, because a Dhaiya is a single-sign transit. Watch the retrograde: Saturn often re-enters a sign months after first leaving it, so the real end can fall well after the first ingress out. Our report prints both spans separately.

### Is Shani Dhaiya worse than Sade Sati?

Shani Dhaiya is generally considered the milder of the two, and it is much shorter, about two and a half years against seven and a half. It also never puts Saturn over the natal Moon, which is the placement the tradition treats as the most demanding part of Sade Sati. How either reads still depends on Saturn's dignity and the dasha running at the time.

### Can Sade Sati and Dhaiya happen at the same time?

No, Sade Sati is Saturn in the 12th, 1st or 2nd from the natal Moon, while Dhaiya is Saturn in the 4th or the 8th. Those sets do not overlap, and Saturn occupies one sign at a time, so a chart is under one, the other, or neither. Both of our calculators run the same underlying scan.

### What is the difference between the 4th and 8th house Dhaiya?

The 4th-house Dhaiya is read for home, mother, property and domestic peace; the 8th-house one for sudden change, inheritance and things that surface from underneath. Neither is universally heavier; that depends on Saturn's dignity and on what Saturn rules from your ascendant. Our report names which of the two applies to each period.

### Why is Shani Dhaiya called Kantak Shani?

Kantak means thorn, and the name carries the tradition's own framing of the transit: an irritation that slows progress rather than an event. Small Panoti is the other common name, set against Sade Sati's Bada Panoti, panoti being Marathi and Gujarati usage for the Saturn period.
