# Numerology Calculator by Name and Date of Birth

This numerology calculator returns four things: your mulank (driver number) from the day you were born, your bhagyank (destiny number) from the full date, your name number by the Chaldean count, and the Lo Shu grid built from your date's digits. Each number is shown with its arithmetic, its ruling graha and what the tradition reads into it.

## What is numerology by name and date of birth?

Numerology reads a person through two independent inputs. The date of birth is fixed and gives the mulank and the bhagyank. The name is chosen, can change, and gives the name number. Indian practice (ank jyotish) then maps each number 1 to 9 onto a graha: 1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn, 9 Mars. That mapping is what connects the numbers to the rest of Jyotish, and it is the reason a numerology reading and a chart reading can be compared at all.

## What is a mulank and how is it calculated?

Your mulank, or driver number, is the day of the month you were born, reduced to a single digit. Born on the 29th: 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2, so the mulank is 2 and the ruling graha is the Moon. It uses the day alone, not the month or the year, which is why it is the one number a person can usually work out unaided. This calculator shows every reduction step rather than only the final digit.

## What is a bhagyank and how does it differ from the mulank?

The bhagyank, or destiny number, reduces the whole date: day, month and year together. Born 29 August 1994: 2+9 + 8 + 1+9+9+4 = 42, then 4 + 2 = 6, so the bhagyank is 6 and the graha is Venus. Where the mulank is read as the disposition a person works with day to day, the bhagyank is read as the direction the life tends toward. When the two agree the reading is straightforward; when they conflict, most of what a numerologist has to say is about that conflict.

## How is the name number calculated?

By the Chaldean system, which is what Indian numerology uses. Each letter carries a value from 1 to 8 (no letter is assigned 9, which is held apart as sacred), and the values sum to a compound number that is then reduced. The Chaldean values follow the sound of a letter rather than its position in the alphabet, so they are not the A=1, B=2 sequence of the Pythagorean system used in the West. The two give different answers for the same name. This calculator prints every letter with its value and totals each word, so the sum can be checked by hand.

## What is the Lo Shu grid?

A three-by-three grid in which the digits of your date of birth are placed, showing which numbers you carry, which repeat and which are absent. Reading it is mostly reading the gaps: an absent number is taken as a quality to be built deliberately rather than one that comes unbidden. The grid's rows, columns and diagonals form planes, and a complete plane is read as a settled strength. The Lo Shu grid is Chinese in origin, not Vedic. It entered Indian numerology relatively recently, and we say so rather than presenting it as classical material.

## What is a mobile number's numerology?

The digits of a phone number are summed and reduced to a single digit, which is then read through the same graha mapping. It is a modern application of an old method, with no classical source behind it, and it is offered here as an optional field for that reason. Our mobile number numerology calculator does the same reading on its own page, with the digit-by-digit working shown.

## Does changing the spelling of your name change your numerology?

It changes the name number, which is the only one of the four it can touch. The mulank, the bhagyank and the Lo Shu grid all come from a date that cannot be edited. This is why name-correction is what numerologists are most often asked for: it is the single input that is genuinely adjustable. Whether an adjusted spelling changes anything beyond the arithmetic is a question the tradition answers and we do not; what we will do is compute any spelling you enter and show its working, so you can compare two of them honestly.

## Is numerology part of Vedic astrology?

Partly, and the parts have different histories. The graha mapping of the numbers 1 to 9 is genuinely Indian and sits alongside Jyotish. The Chaldean letter values are Babylonian in origin. The Lo Shu grid is Chinese. Indian numerology as practised today is a composite of all three, and it is not one of the six Vedangas (Jyotish is). We label each part by where it actually comes from, because a reading is easier to weigh when you know which tradition each piece belongs to.

### The graha mapping is Indian

Assigning the Sun to 1, the Moon to 2, Jupiter to 3 and so on through to Mars at 9 is the genuinely Indian part of the subject, and it is the piece that lets a numerology reading and a chart reading be compared at all. It is what ank jyotish means. It is still not one of the six Vedangas: Jyotish is a Vedanga, and the numbers sit alongside it rather than inside it.

### The Chaldean letter values are Babylonian

The 1-to-8 letter values that produce a name number come from Babylonia, not from India, and they were built around the sound of a letter rather than its place in any alphabet. That is why 9 is missing from the table (it is held apart) and why the Chaldean count and the Western Pythagorean count give different answers for the same name. Neither is a corruption of the other; they are separate systems.

### The Lo Shu grid is Chinese

The three-by-three arrangement is the Lo Shu magic square, Chinese in origin and centuries older than its use in Indian numerology, which it entered relatively recently. It is worth knowing this before reading anything into a missing number: the grid is genuinely old, but it is not classical Vedic material, and a site that presents it as such has told you something false about where its method comes from.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is Mulank and how is it calculated?

Mulank, or the driver number, is your date of birth reduced to a single digit. Someone born on the 23rd has a Mulank of 5 (2+3). It describes how you approach things and is the number most visible in day-to-day behaviour. Each Mulank is ruled by a graha, which links it back to the chart.

### What is the difference between Mulank and Bhagyank?

Mulank comes from the day of birth alone; Bhagyank, the destiny number, comes from the full date reduced to one digit. Mulank shows the nature you act from, Bhagyank the direction life tends to pull toward. When the two agree the person reads as consistent; when they conflict, the tension is usually obvious in the life.

### What is a Lo Shu grid?

The Lo Shu grid is a three-by-three square in which the digits of your birth date are plotted. Which numbers repeat and which are missing is read as strengths and gaps, and complete rows or columns form named planes: mental, emotional, practical. It originates in Chinese numerology and is now widely used alongside Indian systems.

### What do missing numbers in a Lo Shu grid mean?

A missing number is a digit from 1 to 9 that does not occur anywhere in your date of birth, so its cell in the Lo Shu grid stays empty. The tradition reads its qualities as ones built through effort rather than assumed, not as a flaw. Nine appears in every date from 1900 to 1999, so its presence says less for that generation. Your report lists each missing number and what it is read as.

### Does numerology use my name?

The name number does. VedicSense uses the Chaldean system, which assigns values 1 to 8 to letters by sound rather than by alphabetical order, and it is the system most Indian numerologists work with. It is calculated separately from your date-based numbers, and the two are read together.

### How is a name number calculated in numerology?

By the Chaldean system, which is what Indian numerology uses. Each letter carries a value from 1 to 8 (no letter is given 9), and the values are summed into a compound number, then reduced to a single digit. Chaldean values follow the sound of a letter rather than its alphabet position, so they differ from the Pythagorean A=1, B=2 system used in the West.

### What is the difference between Chaldean and Pythagorean numerology?

The letter values. Pythagorean assigns 1 to 9 by alphabet order, A=1 through I=9, and is the Western default. Chaldean assigns 1 to 8 by the sound of the letter and holds 9 apart as sacred, and is what Indian ank jyotish uses. The same name gives a different number in each. This calculator uses Chaldean and prints every letter with its value so you can check the sum.

### Can numerology be done for a business name?

Yes, and it is calculated the same way an individual name is: Chaldean letter values summed and reduced, then read through the graha the number maps to. What differs is the reading: a business name is usually weighed against the founder's own numbers rather than on its own. Our business name numerology calculator does that comparison on its own page.

### What does a mobile number's numerology mean?

The digits are summed and reduced to a single digit, which is read through the same graha mapping as any other number. It is a modern application with no classical source, which is why we say so rather than presenting it as traditional material. It is offered as an optional field here and on its own calculator page, with the digit-by-digit working shown.

### Is numerology part of Vedic astrology?

Partly. The mapping of numbers 1 to 9 onto the grahas is genuinely Indian and sits alongside Jyotish. The Chaldean letter values are Babylonian in origin and the Lo Shu grid is Chinese. Indian numerology as practised today is a composite of all three, and it is not one of the six Vedangas; Jyotish is. We label each part by where it actually comes from.
