# Atmakaraka Calculator

Your Atmakaraka is the graha that has advanced furthest into its own sign: the significator of the self, and the graha a Jaimini reading is run through. This page ranks all eight chara karakas by degree, shows the seven-karaka variant beside the eight, names the Amatyakaraka and Darakaraka, computes the karakamsha, and flags any pair close enough that your birth time decides the order.

## What is an Atmakaraka in Jaimini astrology?

The Atmakaraka (आत्मकारक, the significator of the self) is the graha that has travelled furthest into the sign it occupies. Not the highest longitude in the zodiac: the highest degrees within its own sign, so a graha at 29° of Pisces outranks one at 2° of Aries even though the second is further along the circle. Jaimini's system hands out eight offices in descending order of that advancement, and the first goes to the Atmakaraka. Classical commentators treat it as the chart's own king, the graha through whose condition the rest of a Jaimini reading is taken. It is a lens the system reads through, not a verdict about a person, and that distinction is the whole difference between using the technique and misusing it.

### Chara karakas change; sthira karakas do not

Parashari reading gives the Sun the father permanently and Venus the spouse permanently; those are the sthira, fixed, karakas. Jaimini's chara, movable, karakas are assigned fresh in every chart by degree, so your Darakaraka may be Mars or Saturn or the Moon. Both sets are shown in the result table precisely so a reader can see the two disagree, which is the system working rather than a fault in it.

### Karakamsha is the D9 sign of the Atmakaraka

Once the Atmakaraka is fixed, Jaimini writers look at which navamsa sign it falls in and call that the karakamsha, counting the chart's direction from there. The result computes it for you and gives the theme commentators attach to that sign. The 12th sign from it is read for the chosen deity, which the ishta devata calculator works through step by step.

## How are the chara karakas calculated, exactly?

Take each graha's degrees within its sign, from 0 to 30. Rank them highest first. The first graha takes Atma, the second Amatya, then Bhratri, Matri, Pitri, Putra, Jnati and Dara. Two rules decide whether an implementation is right. Rahu is read backwards: its advancement is 30° minus its degrees in the sign, because it moves retrograde through the zodiac. Rahu at 4°36' of Leo counts as 25°24' and outranks almost everything. Ranking it forwards is the standard error and shifts every karaka below it by one place, producing a table that still looks valid. Ketu is excluded from both schemes, not ranked last: the tradition gives it moksha rather than a worldly office.

### Degrees in sign, never absolute longitude

This is the single most common implementation mistake after the Rahu one. Sorting on sidereal longitude ranks the grahas by which sign they happen to sit in, which is meaningless for this purpose: it would hand the first office to whichever graha is nearest Pisces. The quantity that matters is how far into its own sign each graha has advanced, which is the same measure in every sign and the reason two grahas can be compared at all.

### Ketu keeps only its fixed office

Excluding Ketu is deliberate and stated in the sources: it signifies emancipation and is held to hold no worldly post. Its sthira karaka, Emancipation, is the one role it keeps and is shown in the table. An implementation that ranks Ketu with the rest produces nine candidates for eight offices and pushes one graha out of the list entirely, which means a wrong Darakaraka in most charts.

## What is the difference between the 7 and 8 karaka schemes?

The ashta-chara scheme uses eight karakas and includes Rahu. The sapta-chara scheme uses seven and drops Rahu along with Ketu; with one fewer graha there is one fewer office, and it is the Pitri karaka that goes, the father falling to the Matri karaka. The sutras are terse and commentators read them both ways, so this page leads with the eight-karaka scheme (the commoner one in practice) and prints the seven-karaka assignment beside it in its own column. Presenting one silently would hide a genuine disagreement between commentators as though it were settled. Where the two schemes agree on your Atmakaraka, which is usual unless Rahu is far advanced, you can read the table either way.

## What do the Amatyakaraka and Darakaraka signify?

The Amatyakaraka, the second office, is the counsellor: the work the self actually does, and the people who advise it. Jaimini readings pair it with the Atmakaraka constantly, the king and the minister, and career work in this system usually begins there rather than with the tenth house. The Darakaraka is the eighth and last office, held by the graha that has advanced least, and it is the karaka the tradition reads partnership through, dara meaning spouse, also written kalatra. What it is not is a description of a person. Classical writers use it as a lens for a topic; nothing about it has been shown to predict who anyone meets, and this page will not tell you otherwise. The darakaraka calculator sets it out on its own, in both schemes, with its house, nakshatra and the Upapada.

### Amatya is not simply 'career'

The English gloss loses most of it. An amatya is a minister, the one who executes on behalf of the king, so the office covers the advisers and intermediaries around the self as much as the work itself. Jaimini practice reads it together with the Atmakaraka's condition rather than on its own, and pairs it with the Dasamsa for the working life, which is why the D10 chart sits beside this page in the related links.

### Why the last office goes to the least advanced graha

It falls out of the ranking rather than being chosen: eight offices are handed out in descending order of advancement, so the eighth lands on whichever graha has moved least into its sign. Readers sometimes assume the Darakaraka must be a benefic or must be Venus, and it usually is neither. In the seven-karaka scheme the same position is filled from a pool of seven, so the two schemes can name different grahas for it.

## How much does my birth time change my karakas?

More than on almost any other page here, because karakas turn on degrees rather than on signs. The Moon covers about 13° a day, so an hour of uncertainty moves it roughly half a degree, enough to swap it past a neighbouring graha and shift every office below the pair. The other grahas move far more slowly and are correspondingly safe. The result therefore flags any two adjacent grahas within a tenth of a degree of each other and says so in plain words, because that is the case where the table is deciding on the ephemeris rather than on your chart. Where no such pair exists, the ranking is robust to the sort of birth-time error most people actually have.

## Is the Atmakaraka the same as my lagna lord or my Moon sign?

No, and conflating them is the most frequent confusion here. Your lagna lord is the ruler of the rising sign, fixed by which sign was on the eastern horizon. Your rashi is the sign the Moon occupied, not the Sun sign, which is a different body measured against a different zodiac. The Atmakaraka is neither: it is whichever graha had advanced furthest into its sign, and it can perfectly well be the same graha as your lagna lord by coincidence. They belong to two systems with different rules, and Jaimini is a parallel tradition rather than a correction to Parashari reading. Use the lagna calculator for the ascendant and this page for the karakas; do not expect them to agree.

### Jaimini runs beside Parashari, not under it

The two systems share a zodiac and a set of grahas and then part company: Jaimini uses sign aspects rather than graha aspects, its own dasha schemes, the arudha padas and these karakas. Results from one are not corrections to the other, and an astrologer working in both keeps them separate. Our arudha lagna page is the other Jaimini technique on this site and makes the same point about the image a house casts.

### Rashi means the Moon's sign here

Throughout this site rashi is the sign the Moon occupied at birth (chandra rashi). The sign printed in a newspaper column is the tropical Sun sign, a different body on a different zodiac, and it matches your rashi only by chance. The distinction matters on this page because the Moon is the graha whose degrees move fastest and so the one most likely to change its karaka on a birth-time correction.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does my Atmakaraka mean?

Jaimini treats it as the significator of the self and the graha a reading is taken through: the chart's own king. The texts read the rest of the system from its sign, its navamsa and its condition. It is a lens the tradition uses, not a description of a personality.

### Can two planets both be my Atmakaraka?

Only one takes the office, but two can be close enough that the answer turns on your birth time rather than your chart. The result flags any pair within a tenth of a degree. Below that gap, a few minutes of error can swap them, and the table says so.

### Is Rahu counted as a chara karaka?

Yes in the eight-karaka scheme, no in the seven. Where it is counted, its advancement is measured backwards (30° minus its degrees in the sign) because it moves retrograde. Ketu is excluded from both schemes and keeps only its fixed karaka, Emancipation.

### What is karakamsha?

The navamsa (D9) sign your Atmakaraka falls in. Jaimini writers count the chart's direction from that sign rather than from the birth ascendant, so it is the first thing computed after the karaka table. The result names yours and the theme attached to it.

### Does the Atmakaraka change during life?

No. It is fixed by the birth moment like any other chart element. What changes is which dasha is running, and Jaimini has its own dasha schemes for that. A karaka table computed correctly today gives the same answer in thirty years.

### Do I need an exact birth time for chara karakas?

Yes, more than for most readings. Karakas turn on degrees within a sign, and the Moon moves about half a degree an hour, so an uncertain time can reorder the table. The slower grahas are safe; the result flags any pair close enough to be at risk.

### What does the Darakaraka signify in Jaimini?

Partnership, since dara means spouse (also written kalatra). Classical writers read the topic through it and through the Upapada. Nothing about the placement has been shown to describe a particular person, and this page reports the technique rather than making a claim.

### Why is my Atmakaraka different on another site?

Usually one of three reasons: the site ranked Rahu forwards instead of backwards, it included Ketu, or it used a different ayanamsha. This site uses Lahiri, also called Chitrapaksha, reads Rahu in reverse and excludes Ketu, and prints the degrees so you can check.
